That's about 90,000 more Itaniums than even the optimistic estimates for year to date '03. They are going to sell 90,000 Itaniums in 6 weeks? They must have a [-peep-] load of huge cluster orders for that. They must be virtually giving them away.

100K Itanium chips is roughly inline with estimates (like IDC's 25k IA64 systems. 4 cpu per system on average would seem reasonable). The real question is, how many of these chips are sold to customers, and how many are sitting on shelves at the OEM's ? IF all these chips actuall sold to endusers, then it looks like Itanium may finally be heading somewhere.

But even then, compare this to Intel early access program with Merced, where they seeded the market with 50k machines. Such programs are common practice in the industry, but its still not good to give away 50k machines one year, to be able to sell ~25k 3 years later...

Last thought; 100k cpu's at a ASP of around $2.000 (wich is generous, I don't think the 6 MB 1.5 GHz are the bulk of the sales), makes $200M in revenue. Let's assume 50% gross margin, that is $100M of gross profit. Doesnt compare so well with the estimated ~5 billion invested in the platform so far.. Intel would have to increase yearly revenue by 10x to possible break even in 5 years (assuming no intermediate R&D costs which is of course also nonsense). Either way you look at it, they literally bought themselves a slice of the enterprise market.

Yeah I must be uninformed.

Let's see. I'm finding press releases for Pacific Northwest buying a 1,438 McKinley and Madison system in 2002. Not sure where you got 4,000 cpus from - have a link? Also not sure what that has got to do with 2003 - the system was delivered in 2003 I suppose or has it been delivered yet?

The Lawrence Livermore system was only announced a matter of a few days ago and will not be delivered until 2004. It also only uses 3744 cpus - not 4000.

Couldn't decipher what else you said, but unless you can offer something a little more substantive than that then I'm not sure whether you are any more informed than "AMD users" - you seem more like an Intel fanboy lapping up and exaggerating the Intel PR machine.

Tiger 4 are made directly and sold dirctly by Intel that much larger profit that the CPU itself with the bunch of io chip network CPU and big license for ICC for custom software like DP.

R&D cost it closer to 15 billion if you wan my guess does intel make money with there telecom section no last year they lost 600 million even so they invest at massive rate as there market share rise in the low-end start to have a big name in the high-end were is the money and profit.

Either way you look at it, they literally bought themselves a slice of the enterprise market.

Number were give that itanium sold as much in the last 6 month that power series or spack. It not bad in 3 year what others have made in 10 year.Cost were huge also will be the profit in 10 year.It like hydrogene engine from GM.

Have some links to back that up? Because so far I am seeing alot less than 4k CPU's - less than 2k in fact.

Also Intel's own press release says delivery for the other system is 2004.

Anyway, what about the other 10's of 1000's of CPU's you insist have been sold?
