To a sniper, there's no reason to lament. You just were willing to pay
more.

qfrost, I agree on your first view on bidding. Inflating the price when
there's 6 days left is kinda silly. If you really want the item you're
going to have to wait for the last few seconds and duke it out. It's
unfortunate but that's the way it goes.

Sniping's just annoying. If everyone bid the max they were willing to
pay, it wouldn't be necessary to snipe. If ebay would extend every
auction for 5 minutes when a bid comes in the last 5 minutes, buyers
would get more of a fair shake like at a live auction (going, going,
gone!!) and sellers/ebay would get more fees and price.... they really
should offer this format. Maybe they don't because some wiseacre with
too many ebay accounts would write a script that would continuously
place a bid on an item with no intention of purchasing it.

Why don't you just set a *snipe* for the maximum you're willing to bid,
because you'll never get everyone to just bid their max and leave it at
that. It's not gonna happen, ever.
When you snipe, you don't give the world an opportunity to keep outbidding
you. You'll win a lot more auctions at a lower hammer price that way.
I understand what you're saying, but IMHO it's foolish not to snipe (or at
least bid at the last possible moment.) Sniping is beneficial to all
buyers, but not the seller. What annoys *me* is when two bidders get into a
bidding war long before the auction is set to close -- what a waste of time
and money.
If I were a seller, I'd agree with your sentiments 100% ;-)

I find that IF I put a bid out there before it ends (don't snipe), then
I find that people come along and are curious about what my max bid is.
They nibble away at it little by little until they finally reach my
max. Strange I know, but it has happened several times. If you snipe,
as someone previously said, you are going to get it for a lower hammer
price.

Which means a lower fee for eBay. However, if eBay decided to extend
auction closing times because of late bidding, many bidders would stop
using its services (including me). Fewer bidders would mean lower
fees, too. Rest assured, Ebay wants to maximize its fees, and if it
thought it could make more money by extending auction closing times, it
would have done so a long time ago.
I'm not the author of what's below, but I agree with everything in it:
Yahoo Auctions offers extensions. Browse their site, and see how
seldom it is used. Have you ever bought anything on Ubid.com, where
extensions are automatic? I did, once. What a miserable experience.
Veteran sellers know that people who are willing to bid their max
(including snipers) are turned off by a format that gives lowballers
all the time they want to chisel away at the leading bid. It also
gives shilling sellers free rein to inflate the bids. It's not the
right format for a global, 24/7 venue.

OK, thanks for the clarification. You_implied_dishonesty regarding
sniping though was all I was pointing out. Which is silly to say and
now I see that is why you said it.
I persnally buy both ways. If I REALLY want the item I will snipe but
if I am casually interested I will place a bid at let it ride.
