I recently bought the MapSend CD for my Magellan Sportrack GPS which
allows me to connect my GPS to my laptop via the serial port at 4800
baud, and map my progress with my laptop. It also offers POI data
(restaurants, hotels, gas stations, parks, etc) that I can lookup on the
laptop or transfer to my GPS. However with only 6MB of add on memory I
just limit my transfers to street data. If I need to know POI data I
use the Yellow Page. Besides that what the former Palm.net offered to
my VIIx was so much better for POI data, because it mapped the entire
US, while the GPS is limited to a aging CD-ROM disc.

I'm suprised at how fast I can transfer 3MB of street data via a 4800
baud connection. Its cool how fast things transfer with a null modem
serial connection. Know since my laptop is such a joke for battery
power, is it possible to also use my serial port GPS with my PDA? Has
anyone here done such a thing, and if so what did you do? I am using a
Jornada 720 HPC and a Palm OS type unit. I suppose with the Windows CE
device the CF card would serve as the storage area. With the Palm
device I dont know how much I could store with only 8MB.

My Palm unit connects to my Mac, while my Jornada 720 to my Windows PC.
Has anyone else used a GPS with a PDA? It does not matter if its
PocketPC, HPC, or Palm. I supose since I use both Mac and Windows there
may be a option for me.

Yes you can use the GPS with your handhelds, but not the MapSend CD data or
maps. You basically can set up the SportTrack to deliver GPS data to the
handheld as a serial data stream. Typically that is input to the handheld
via a sync like cable connection. Then you would need some sort of mapping
software to read the incoming GPS data and do something with it on the
Handheld. Lots of that stuff available. Delorme makes a package, Street
Atlas Handheld that has both Palm and PocketPC components. Not sure about
Handhelds.

I have a Sporttrack myself and actually find the map data is much more
compressed on it than any of my PPC programs, i.e. the file size for he same
area is much smaller for the Magellan.

With the handheld you do often get the advantage of street routing (as
opposed to as-the-crow-flies), and audible prompts.

I've been using a Palm with a GPS for some time. All you need is a null
modem to connect the serial cables, or you can get a dedicated cable for
not much. I recommend one that powers both the GPS and the PDA from the
cigarette lighter while providing a data link between them. For mapping, I
use Mapopolis, which also has a PPC app. You can get cables for that,
also. Mapopolis will run in 8MB, if you have an SD card. It reads the
maps off the card in real time, and gives you voice prompts, automatic
routing and rerouting for the entire US for $100. This needs either an OS5
Palm or a newer PPC device. The Jornada might do it, I don't know.

Connecting a GPS and a PDA is very common, and works very well.

I used the DeLorme Earthmate with my trusty ol' m515 for many trips using a
Serial HotSync cable and a Null modem to connect to the GPS... worked like a

Thank you sir;

I will take a look at that package. I suppose that I'd need to purchase
a regular palm serial cable over the hotsync cradle, and get a gender
changer.

As with the HPC the same. For gender changes I will need to go to a
nice computer store, over a place like Best Buy which is not guaranteed
to sell anything old.

Yes I see there are some advantages to connecting a PDA to a GPS over
just using the GPS directly. It looks like my Palm does not meet the
system requirements. I thought that there are people using GPS's with
Jornada HPC's.

I agree for connection with serial cables.

But I had many problems (and finally no solution) trying
bluetooth connections, first with a T3 and a Fortuna ClipOn,
and second with a TH55, with this same ClipOn and then
with an Emtac Trine. Those BT GPS units was/are working
perfectly with laptops or PocketPC...

I don't know about the Fortuna specifically, but there are plenty of BT GPS
units that work with the T3 and Bluetooth.

I've tried using my Garmin with my Treo 600 through the OEM serial hotsync
cable with a null modem connector without success. The null modem connector
works perfectly between the Garmin and my old Psion. I have read that the
Treo serial port is non-standard and has to have a power supply to enable
it. If anyone has any experience of using the serial hotsync cable with GPS
I would be very grateful for the info.

I wonder... How much memory does your Palm need for maps?

Depends. On the mapping app, and on the map. Mapopolis maps range from a
few kb to several MB in size, depending on the county. Later maps are
separated in to several chunks per county. However, it's possible to leave
all the maps on the SD card and have it read the necessary data from the map,
so a couple of MB is usually enough. More is always better, though.

Yes, that is a problem between some BT Palm PDA, some BT GPS,
and I add MapSonic BT (ViaMichelin) software to the list; may be
some are OK, but other are not.

And "plenty" was not sufficient for me with two BT GPS models among
the best ones, each of them perfectly working in other environments.

I have read other forums where both the Fortuna and the Emtac were reported
to have BT connection problems with PPC devices. I am guessing from your
original posting that the issue was a configuration problem with the Palm
devices. Especially when you indicated that you used the same Fortuna on two
different Palm devices (One from Palm and one from Sony) and you had the
same problem with 2 different devices on the same (Sony) Palm device. This
to me indicates a config issue not necessarily a device issue.

Just a note. The Delorme Pocket option really isn't very good.
Something like TomTom is a LOT better. (I've tried both.)
