Windows 7 Matshita - DVD-RAM UJ-862ps

I have a Sony VAIO win 7 laptop with a panasonic matshita made dvd-ram that is not recognised by the computer.
can anybody help me?

Is it the drive that is not recognised or the disks?

With Windows 7, there is an option to not show the drive if there are no disks inserted or the drive has a blank disk. Go to Folder Options and enable all drives to be enabled.
