I'm going to build a smal server for my own personal use, and I want to try to build it as silent as possible.

If I can choose between several amd cpu's, which of them has the lowest temperature? I have seen the article here at TH where some of the cpu's are listed and how much heat are dispatched.

Does anybody know of information on how hot each amd cpu is?

You know that 'heat' and 'hot' is different to thermal output yes?
How hot a cpu runs depends on its thermal output and how good its cooling is.

If you want to reduce or minimise the thermal output then do the following:

Find the slowest speeds of the late Tbred B and Barton batch cpu's...

The XP1700+/1800+/2200+ Tbred B (if you can find one) or the XP2500+ barton.

You may also find that such chips will also run just fine at Below their default voltage, which will further improve temp's by lowering the thermal output.

e.g. My TbredA XP1700+ had a stock voltage of 1.5v, but would do 1.4v very stable.

And finally, you will want a Big-Ass copper heatsink to dissapate the heat, and preferably a large sloq and quiet 80mm or 92mm fan ontop.

MCX-462U, SLK900 vantec Aero are all good heatsinks that immediately come to mind.

Depending on your performance needs maybe you could get by using an older, ie P2 AMDK62 etc., machine. Back then they used small wimpy heatsinks because the CPUs didn't use much power. Imagine what a heatsink for an Barton/P4 could do if retrofitted to one of those older CPUs.

newegg carries moblie athlon xps...45w thermal disipation IIRC (thats about on par with a 1ghz coppermine).

BTW they will work fine in a standard athlon board

Ah .. my english is ... rusty.

What I ment is how much heat each cpu gives.

My performance needs are quite moderate, I don't belive an ftp + web + other small server software ++ require alot of cpu power. The server is for my own personal use + maybe a few more ppl.

The suggestion looks good.

The only thing I'm wondering on is how come some ppl have dead hot cpu's? I've heard complaints about ppl running xp1800, and have alot of fans in front and back, plus a good cooler with an enormuos fan on top.

mobile amd xp???? I've seen them using socket A, but I was told that an mobile amd could not be used on a regular Socket A motherboard.... hmm hmm. I would need some info on that one...

good info this far - thx

Go with the xp2500, they are cheap and cool. Buy a retail version, as the included fan is very good and ultra quiet.

The coldest would be a liquid nitrogen cooled k-6 100mhz or something like that. :p

My own beast: Athlon 2700xp+ (oc: 3200xp+ with 200fsb) , Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/370) , 512mb ddr400. SO MUCH faster than my last computer (pIII 550......)
Edited by coylter on 11/29/03 06:18 PM.

People having heat problems with an XP1800+ will almost certainly be using older Palomino Core chips. A New XP1800+ chip today will probably be a thoroughbred 'B' core which is far cooler running.

Server huh..

Get yourself a barton 2500+. They are cheap, check with www.pricewatch.com, low voltage of 1.65, and has a good cache of 637k of cache. Cache is good this tha have with data servers. As for cooling, doesnt really matter wich cpu but which cooler to use. Get yourself a full copper coller and a good fan will keep that CPU very cooler. I got my barton 2500 OCed to a barton 3500 and it never breaks 45 degrees celius.

The 2500 Barton is on my whish list... would need an new cooler... maybe. Have an old Taisol cgk760 unmodified.

Anyway... doesn't look like I'm going to get an answear to my question. THG should focus more on heat and noise factors

No you just have not done any research.

Get a 1976 chevy c30 heatercore a 120mm fan, an eheim 1250 pump and a DD rbx waterblock. Run the fan at 5v and your hard drive will be the loudest thing in your case. Happy?

Well thats not a nice comment.
I gave you lots of info and you say its not good enough.

The cpu thats the coldest is the one cooled by liquid nitrogen!

You can make it as cool (and as quiet) as you want!

Liquid nitrogen, dry ice, vapochill, watercooling then aircooling.

If you want a quiet PC, you're going to have to spend some money... whether you want to hear that or not is irrelevant. There are many PC cases and power supplies on the market that are marked as 'quiet'. THG has done a review on a few of these, as a matter of fact. You'll just have to do a bit of digging around in the older articles.

A large copper heatsink is important if you plan on running a relatively fast CPU... that way you can get a large fan that doesn't spin as fast. Another alternative is, of course, water cooling.

Either way, to get a 'quiet' PC, you're going to have to spend a little more money than you would on a normal PC.

If you gonna smack that beyotch up to 3200+ speeds, I would to keep it stable.
