LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms "master" and "slave" on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive.

The request -- which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components -- came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled "master" and "slave" and filed a discrimination complaint with the county's Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.

"We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment components that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature," Sandoval said in the memo, which was distributed last week and made available to Reuters.

LOL. A lot of fuss for something 99% of us don't think twice about. What next?

So many racist jokes come to mind. Must...hold......back. Anyway, the master and slave terminolgy is logical...the master drive gets the right of way, meaning that it essentially controls the other one, which is its slave. All's good, stop worrying LA, there was no racial or sexist remarks intended by the nerds who invented it (or was there?? :wink: ).

Hahaha, yeah, but something about them leads me to believe that they didn't invent those terms.

I wonder if LA was pissed about the racial implications or the BDSM reference, I'll ask my roommate when he gets back from wherever he is (he's from LA, but knows nothing about computers, as shown by his insistence that his 2ish yr old ibook will outperform my computer in ANYTHING).

motherboards - Blatantly sexist.

male/female connectors - Disgusting. I'm calling my pastor to get a petition going. Heck, I think I'll even call Pat Robertson. This is clearly just another way for the planned parenthood agenda to force sexual connotations on our children. SOMEBODY THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!!!

whitebox/blackbox testing - These terms are blatantly racist, LA should not do business with any company that conducts either type of testing.

SCSI - this is a slap in the face to unshaven homeless people everywhere.

Aborting processes - Abortion is too touchy an issue to bring up.

Harddisk - I feel sexually harassed just hearing this word. We all know what it REALLY means.

floppy disks - Again, will the sexual harassment ever stop? This is obviously a state that follows Harddisk.

RAM - Disgusting term for an act of violent sex.

Memory - People with Alzheimers will be offended. Of course, they'll probably just forget it ever happened...

Plug N Play - More Planned Parenthood agenda...

Servers - Just a more polite way of saying "slaves".

daughterboards - more sexism. Filthy animals.

And don't even make me bring up Linux... between GREPing, FINGERing, MOUNTing, and KILLing alone, LA obviously can't use any *nix type OS. Some poor widdle delicate people would get offended. Maybe if they took their medication...

Ah yes, the vast lunacy that is my fellow californians. That's why I love it here. When you're only slightly deranged living in the land of people completely deranged, you seem quite normal to everyone around you. :)
