My Palm IIIxe still does everything I need it to, except sync up with
newer computers. I see a cheap USB infrared device is available -- can
I expect this to work well? I've never used infrared comm before. Is
it appreciably slower or more error-prone than the serial connection?

There is of course the good old serial to USB adaptor.

I've synced my m505 via infrared before. I synced it to a laptop
that has built-in infrared.
My experience was that it's basically exactly the same speed as
RS232. (It probably uses ircomm, which is in effect RS232 emulation
over infrared.) So, it's not a step down from RS232, but straight
USB synchronization is a million zillion times faster. (So much
faster that if I were still on a pre-USB device, I'd consider
upgrading just to save time. And because I don't like buying
AAA batteries.)

.... which I tried with my new Macintosh iBook and my otherwise
perfectly good IIIxe and could not get to work despite trying a number
suggestions I found online. I still use the IIIxe with my older
desktop Windows machine, but I'd really like to use it on the Mac.
