Well, I was thinking about building my own comp because I'd assume it'd be cheaper then buying it from a store or online. The thing is, I don't know what i need for a gaming comp!
These are the comp specs on my future comp, i could use some help.

Pentium4 3.0 ghz or more
DVD Drive - any, i'd rarly use it
Motherboard??
1gig ram - Brand???
80gig Harddrive - Brand??
Case??
Fans??
NVidia GeForce FX 5600 Ultra - Got it already

I only want to spend around $1,000 though so any tips on what i need would be a big help, thanks.

If I were you I would get a 2.6C or a 2.8C. The C means the run at 800fsb and have HT. Those are both very overclockable chips. For motherboard I would reccommend either the IS7 or the P4P800. If think 2 X 256 should be enough ram. If your are going to overclock get 2 x 256 Hyperx 3500. Get a 80gig WD special edition with 8 meg cache.

here's a few ideas;

case: try antec its built very solid and comes w/a power supply for under $100 (i have the 630 performance plus 2)

cpu: p4 2.8c is a real good choice $215 @ newegg for a retail version (retail comes w/a hsf, oem doesn't)

optical drive: lite-on has a dvd/cd-rw combo for about $65

hard drive: again i agree w/the above poster. a western digital 80gm special edition 8mb cache is a solid choice.

ram: be careful use a name brand lite crucial. i've seen alot of problems w/people using no-name brands. once you decide on a mobo check their website for recomended ram. if its not listed then contact either the mfg or post here and someone will help you.

mobo: the abit is7 always gets good reviews.

fans: that depends on your case(what it comes with and has slots for). i have one in the front, blowing in, and one on the back, blowing out.

good luck!
Edited by athalus on 12/05/03 06:45 AM.

Price limit?

Edit: You're reusing the graphics, what other components? Floppy? Cd?

Depending on how much you want to overclock a good choice would be a 2.6c with some DDR500(PC4000). That would let you overlcok somewhere around 3.25ghz. This option would be cheaper thand buying a 3.2ghz CPu + DDR400 ram and will give you a big performance boost. Fo more information on this go on tomshardware.com and search for the DDR500 article.

Whatever you do buy a CDR/DVD combo drive. Liteon makes nice ones. I know that office max has one on sale for $15 bucks after rebates this weeks but it is not a liteon. I am sure it is fine though.

Balls, said the Queen if I had them I would be king!
