TECH: CV Coin Door Switches Dead

Last response: in Video Games

Hi all, I'm still a pretty new pin owner (almost a whole three weeks
now! heh), so please bear with me a bit!

The diagnostic switches on my CV's coin door have gone dead. This is
quite strange, as I was adjusting a few things just fine, then closed
the coin door to play a few, and then opened it later and they weren't
working. I've searched the group and I've made sure that all of the
connectors seem tight, I've checked all of the fuses in my backbox for
continuity and they all passed. I'm quite stumped! Any suggestions on
things to check next would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Trinity. I went and did continuity checks from the buttons to
the interface board. All 4 were fine. I did a continuity from the
button's ground to the ground pin on the interface cable and got
nothing. I think that's probably where I'll pick up the trail in the
AM. I'm a bit confused though: if there were no ground, shouldn't I be
getting no power to the coin door (for example, the coin lights are
lit)? I'm still a little green but trying to pick it all up fast.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, should have been more specific. I was just adjusting some
software settings in the operator menu. No hardware adjusting going on!
It does sound like the ground wire is perhaps broken. I'm guessing the
next step is checking to see where it's broken. I did also check the
distance to the door to make sure nothing was shorting and everything
there looks good. Thanks for the help Lloyd!

What were you adjusting ? Be sure you didn't cause a problem there.

Next up, check the back of the diagnostic switches to be sure they aren't
shorting to metal. Then check continuity of the wires from the switches to
the coin door interface board the door harness plugs onto. you easily could
have a broken wire in the door harness. LTG :)

Well since you can't put in test mode any more do a continuity check on
wires from coin door switches to the interface board, maybe move the door
while you push button, you could just have a break in one wire in the casing
of ground wire. Or the unl2803a has died on the cpu, which is already
socketed. The game will still start up but no buttons, possibly lost the 12
volts.

I think there are two different grounds black for buttons on door and might
not be black for lights, the ground is called a return but it is the same, I
would have to go look, even if it is black there is probably another run for
the lights.

Fixed! Brian hit it right on the head. One of the ground wires was
hanging on to one of the coin mechs "by a thread". Went back and
resoldered the joint and it's good as new! Thanks for the help to all
of you, can't believe I missed something so elementary!

Derek,
Have you checked the wires on the coin in switches? One of these
disconnected can cause the test, etc.. switches to stop working.

I had this happen a few months ago, same situation as yours, and it turned
out that a ground wire had come loose. One ground is daisy chained to all
of the switches, so that took them all out at one time.
