Hello, I've had issues in the past trying to install Win 7 on some IDE HDDs. I wanted to upgrade my mom's computer to Windows 7 but she's got my old 80GB IDE HDD from Western Digital. Would the HDD work with Windows 7? I don't want to format her drive to find out after that it doesn't work. Thanks for your time.

It should work.

But here's your problem - if the drive in your mother's computer does not have Vista on it, you will need to format it anyway if you have an Upgrade copy of Win7.

I'd put another drive in the computer if I could and install Win7 on the new drive.

Well I realize that her comp needs to be reformatted before I can put Win 7 on I want to avoid having to buy a new drive (I'm still waiting for 2TB HDDs to drop to $200 mark).

I've installed Windows 7 onto a 2004-vintage laptop with a 40GB IDE hard drive and it went on without a peep.
