They are saying that microsoft will be making the cpu for the xbox2. So.. is anyone else afraid of what possible damage this will do to the market?

If microsoft enters the cpu business i think we might end up seeing Intel and AMD merger.

Think about it.. all those HP's.. emachines..Dell all coming with the brand new microsoft cpu!

Then.. knowing them they'll make it so windows wont recognize any other cpu.

At first, I thought SoD had started another topic... *phew*

I've heard nothing about MS going into the processor business. If they did, I'm sure that would get the antitrust lawyers all in an uproar.

According to this story:

<A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=12587" target="_new">http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=12587</A>

Ibm will be making the chips. The story has a link to a year old story that hints that Microsoft will be designing the chips, although it appears to be speculation.

If they did start making chips, may I suggest they use this in their marketing campaign:
Microsoft CPUs. If you liked the first 5 versions of Windows, wait till you try out the first version of our chip!

IBM is manufacturing the CPU for Xbox 2 and ATi will be making the GPU. Infact IBM is making the CPU for all of the next gen consoles (PS3, GC2, Xbox2)

Microsoft has a history of software running on whatever platform is available - that is how they make their cash. Apart from the recent Xbox and sidewinder series, Microsoft is a software giant and would not enter into chip production as some have hinted. OK Bill has loads of cash but I think that starting up in the fabrication business is a little far fetched even for him.

And as for microsoft indirectly supporting Macs as somebody said - how does that work just because they are buying IBM chips which also feature in the MAC? Microsoft has nothing to worry about from Macs - they are a tiny part of the market and that part only exists because some people like the design of them and some deluded people still think they are better for CAD / Publishing.

My guess is that Pentium M is more suit able to have to next contrant more that anyone. If they go with Power or Cell CPU all game from Xbox 1 will be not compatible.Unlike PS3 that will support PS1 PS2 PS3.

MS and IBM are combining to design the chip to MS's specifications. It will be fabbed by IBM. Supposedly, they have decided to base their chip off the PowerPC5 (G5 is based off of the PowerPC4(+)), so it is not, in fact, supporting Mac, but rather supporting IBM.

I highly doubt HP, eMachine, or Dell would start using this processor either, seeing as it is VERY expensive (used only in IBM's top of the line multi-processor workstations) and not based of the x86 architecture (meaning all programs would have to be recoded). Oh yeah, IBM wouldn't sell rights to the processor for anything less than a Gates-like fortune.

Frankly, writing Windows for the PowerPC architecture would also be stupid. It would cost more money in development for a VERY small share of the market (all non-Mac PowerPCs currently run Linux), simply making it not worth MS's time or $$$$.

I'm pretty sure that whatever variations of the PPC5 that MS and IBM create for the Xbox2 will remain for the Xbox2.

I think I'm going to throw up.

Well, the only way I see that helping steve is that then IBM has more money to spend on techs that can go in there chips, which would help macs, but it would also help bill because those techs could go in the next xbox...

Isn't Microsoft sort of jumping into the CPU market with their specification for the fritz chip?

Or we could just shove the techs in the next xbox..

ROFLOL sorry had to be said(sad) IBM suck's never had an IBM run a game that made me feel good. LAGMASTER computer systems they should have called it. In fact my experiences with IBM is what turned me into a home made Box Junky anything to get away from IBM.
Microsoft now if they start to make a CPU you can be sure they wont corner the market I hardly think Intel would put up with it. Yes Microsoft makes all the computer software that makes our world go around but they would not stand a chance against Intel I mean Intel has the real brains they are the ones that can make a CPU all they would do is get into the software business. God I love free enterprise.
I am starting to feel the need for Intel...I mean after all they are the ones that pulled all the hardware out of the Roswell Crash so they are the ones with the technology LOL :)
