Solo 9300 -- 5

Hello All

I think I've seen this raised here before, but I can't find a resolution.

The Crucial site shows that a Gateway Solo laptop 600 Pent III or higher can
accept two 256 RAM modules. The Gateway site shows two 128 max. Anyone try a
256 module in a 9300 600 Pent III or above? Thx.

Alternatively, if the max ram on a solo is 288, can I use ONE 256 RAM module
and leave the other socket empty? The problem is I think there is a problem
with on of my RAM sockets. So I am trying to use only one. Anyone know?

FYI

I decided to try the 256 MB module. Gateway assures me the machine WON'T
recognize it. But Crucial says it has sold thousands of 256 MB for the Solo
9300 with a 600 Pent III and above and have had very few returns. They
guarantee it will work. So we'll see. I'll post back when it arrives
(two-day shipping), in case any other 9300 owners out there are interested

256M should work fine as long as they are low-density (16 chip).

That's great news. Interesting that Gateway says 256 won't be recognized and
Crucial says it will. But Crucial usually seems to know what works ... at
least that's the impression I get. Gateway.. well, not so much. But I could
end up eating those words.

Thanks Edward. Again, I will post back once I get them... just in case
anyone is wondering.

By the way, I have no idea what happened to my subject line. I must have
wiped out the rest of it by mistakenly typing "5" or something :O)

Hello to anyone still watching this thread...

Got the 256 RAM module today. So far so good. It IS being recognized by my
laptop, despite Gateway's assurance it wouldn't be. I also sprayed contacted
cleaner into the other RAM socket and put one of the 64 MB modules in there.
The computer so far is not having any problems (though I expect it to, and
will remove the 64 MB if there is a restart.)

Right now Belarc Adviser shows this:

352 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'ON BOARD' has 32 MB
Slot 'M_CN2' has 64 MB
Slot 'M_CN3' has 256 MB
