I have just purchased a new 2200XP (Retail) but don't want to use the thermal pad that came with it. The local shop sells Artic Alumina Ceramic, is this any good? Any tips on applying it?

It's very good, there are better but the difference would be very small and probably unnoticeable to you.

Beaware that using non-authorized thermal goo on amd chips will void the warrenty. If you are going to void the warrenty get some good goo like AS3.

Pop the heatsink in the freezer for while to further stiffen up the wax pad. Scrape it off with the edge of a credit card or something similar. Only use a very small dab of the paste (I read about more probs caused by too much than not enough).

Persoanlly, I'm not too worried about the warranty. If I have to RMA my Barton they ain't gonna get it with my paste on it. You gotta remove the HS to take out the cpu anyway. IIRC AMD's website lists other pastes that they approve of for warrantry purposes.

Paste only gives you 1-3 degrees over pads. Buffing the sink smooth can give you 1-3 degrees. Chances are doing both will only give you around 4 degrees.
