I'll be building a rig for my mom whose system power requirements will be pretty small compared to what most of you are used to.
She wants to be able to run Windows XP, PowerPoint, and a few other Office programs without encountering any lag issues. At the same time she doesn't want to spend that much. Looking at what she's asking for I can already tell that she won't be needing more than a few hundred (if even) in components.
But knowing the wisdom I can glean off the tech gurus in here I'm going to ask for some suggestions as to just what I should throw into this system. I'm going to build it cheap but I want to ensure I built it quality as well.
What would you toss into this oversized calculator (all new parts)?
That first system might be a bit much if you really don't want to spend the cash. It's still cheap, but you could save more if she only needs to use office.
Maybe an older athlon, like a 2200+ or 2000+, even a bit less would be more than enough. Since the bus speed is slower for those, you can get cheaper pc2700 ram (go for a decent brand though, like crucial maybe, and stick with the 512MB, XP needs it). With only office files and the like, an 80MB hard drive would be more than enough, if you save enough, get the smallest drive you can that has the 8MB cache (helps speed things up). To sum up.
Asus a7n8x (not sure about the motherboard)
AMD Athlon 2000+
two sticks of 256 MB pc2700 ram
Radeon 9200
Maxtor 80 GIG 8mb cache HD
The previous system would be better, but it all depends on how much $ you want to save. You could even go for an integrated graphics motherboard to save on the graphics card.
Tigerdirect has an eMachines XP2400+ system for $349. Buy that, clean out the garbage programs, and call it what it is: A cheap PC 4x as fast as she needs.
