My PC is acting strangely.

My PC is fine when I first use it but after a few hours of use (say 3-4
hours) it slows down markedly. Internet browsing is incredibly slow (a page
can take 2 minutes to download - or time-out in the process). Rebooting
doesn't help. Web pages still take an age to load.

Oddly, sometimes the PC starts to behave again and pages download OK. And my
PC seems to download files OK (say virus definitions) but not web pages.
Weird. And I can access newsgroups OK (using Outlook Express) - which is how
I am sending this message.

I know that it sounds like an over-heating problem but I have a cool PC.
Lots of fans and I can touch my components when I switch off. I really don't
think that it's a heating problem.

I've ran spyware checks and anti-virus check and my system appears to be
clean.

Help!

How do you connect to the Internet? What hardware is used? Whether you
use a modem or a network adapter (nic), that component may be failing.
Try swapping out that component with a known-working one. If that
solves the problem, you know the original component needs to be
replaced.

Are you using a good firewall like ZoneAlarm? It could be that your computer
begins sending out so much information that it slows the internet connection
down, especially if you are using a dialup connection. ZoneAlarm will alert
you if a program is trying to connect behind your back. It is then up to you
to either allow or disallow the action.
