Evening all, For the last 8 months I have been running 3 Ibm drives a 30 , 60 and a 185 gb. I was using the 30gb drive as my c drive untill last sunday it failed with loads of bad sectors and is totally screwed.
I have since replaced it with a new ibm 120gb drive.
The main problem is that I can't get my system to recocognise my 185gb drive when I have my new drive in. I managed to get my 30gb drive functional again via a factory format. By doing the registry editing "EnableLargeLba" everything was fine. It just doesn't seem to work when I have my new drive plugged in !. I have reinstalled win2k about 4 times (sp4) before trying to get it to recognise my 185gb
What could be causing this ?????????

Do you have the jumpers on the drives set properly. Makes a world of difference.

If you have more than one device on a IDE cable EACH drive must be set to MASTER(connected to end of cable) and SLAVE(connected to middle of cable).

I aint signing nothing!!!

I assume you are booting from a drive other than your 30GB drive now. You may want to swap the drives out while booting up and seeing which one works and which one doesn't. Just test them one at a time. Double-check your jumpers. You'll probably either find out that a drive isn't working, or your jumper settings are off.

Also, you might want to be wary of WHY your 30GB drive failed. Was it heat? Was it age? Was it a bad power supply? I've seen more than one HD go bad because of a bad power supply. I spent a good deal of time trying to fix a corrupted OS once... and it turned out the problem was my HD, which was dying because of a bad power supply.

I definitely think checking your power supply might be a good idea. Trying to troubleshoot an old PC of mine that had a bad powersupply has haunted me to this day....

Thanks for the reply's
here is my old setup:

30gb Master----------60Gb slave Ide Port 1
Dvdrw Master--------180gb Slave Ide Port 2

All I have done is replaced the dieing 30gb drive which is almost 3 years old, with a new 120gb IBM drive (all my drives are IBM)
The jumper settings are correct.
The problem is that windows won't detect my 185gb drive because of the 137gb limit, its formatted in 1 180 gb partion. So when I do a clean install windows won't recognise it is there untill I have installed SP4 for Win2k and made the required registry alterations.
This works fine when I use the gb drive but when I try using the 120gb drive it never works.
This has really got me stumped because I can see no explanation what so ever.
Any ideas

So I assume that you've formatted all your drives with NTFS, right?
