My brother needs a streaming device for DLNA videos from his windows 7 PC to the streaming device, the streaming device connected via HDMI to tv obviously. The TV is a dumb TV and he always complains how he cannot watch his downloaded movies on his tv. Over 90% of the movies are .mkv files in the x264 codec in 1080p resolution. He has a cisco/linksys e3200 300+300 mbps wireless-N router that operates in 2.4+5ghz.
The only feature he will care about is it's ability to stream his downloaded movies over dlna to his tv from his pc. All the netflix etc crap does not matter at all. What box is going to have the highest amount of compatibility with the widest variety of file formats and video/audio codecs? Price cap at 150 dollars. Remember the only feature that matters is streaming the maximum amount of formats and codecs over dlna.
My research has brought me to the wd live as having a lot of support for streaming many local file types over dlna to the tv so right now that's what I will probably get unless someone here knows better. Thank you for your help.
