Onkyo hts3400 troubleshooting

Hello,
We recently bought the hts3400 Onkyo home theatre system. The problem is only the front speakers work. The front speakers work for all of the inputs. Surround sound does not work for anything. So there is no sound coming from the centre speaker, the subwoofer, or the rear speakers. Any help would be appreciated.

The input must be surround sound encoded for the surround to work.
Download the entire manual (long form) from the manufacturer website.
The unit does not come with complete instructions, you have to download the manual.
The unit can be set for "simulated surround" I think, if the source is not encoded.
OR you could just have a defect.
