Can i install a new version of windows without recovering my system

i want to install windows 8 without recovering my windows 7 in my hp pavilion dv6.. how can i do it..???

I'd run the upgrade assistant first to make sure the laptop and hardware are compatible. If it is, then go out and buy a copy, then you will have install disks.

and then come back here when you realize it doesn't work 100% with your other apps, and want to go back to windows 7.
