Here is a query for you. Yesterday (05/09/2005) a folder marked backups
appeared on my desktop. The folder contains 2 files titled
backup-20050906-200750-132
and
backup-20050906-200750-131.2.1001

I have no idea what either are. I have tried googleing this but to no avail.
I have scanned the folder using Norton Antivirus, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE,
Spybot and MS antispyware and all returned nothing. I think this may be just
something silly like me having a setting wrong but the weird thing is that I
deleted the folder yesterday and it has regenerated today. Any body got any
ideas.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Right click one of the files, left click Properties, and see if you can determine which
application created them. If it says Unknown Application, and the file is small, open it
with Notepad and see if amongst the garbage characters you can find an application name,
or other clues. If it is too big to open in Notepad, open it in WordPad. If no clues are
found there, try going to:

http://www.paretologic.com/products.aspx

Download and Install Xoftspy, allow the definitions to be updated after installing (each
time that you open the program it connects to the parent site to see if there are updated
definitions. After updating definitions, click the scan settings button, then click on
Click Here To Select Folder, and then click to put a checkmark to the left of your local
hard drive (usually C), then click the Start button to start the scan. For me, Xoftspy
seems to find spyware/adware/malware/trojans that Ad-Aware and other utilities miss. The
trial version of Xoftspy is crippled. It will give a list of what it finds, you can click
on an item and get object details, but it will not remove the items. If you register and
pay, and type in the product key, Xoftspy will then remove the problem objects and
automatically back them up to quarantine. You can delete them from quarantine at a later
time, when you are sure that you do not need the quarantined objects. Some software will
not run without its spyware/adware. So, it is then your call if you want to really use
that software, and unquarantine the item that is stopping it from running. Personally, I
uninstall all software which requires adware/spyware in order to run. Even if you have no
intention or purchasing Xoftspy, at least download and install it and scan your drive, to
see what items, if any, it finds that your other utilities did not find.

One says it was installed by MSN and the other is a mystery.
