Is the Prescott worth the wait ? Or is a 2.8C Northwood what I should buy? And just spend the savings on a LOT more memory. I realize the Prescott will be priced higher for several months. I'm looking to replace a PII-400, so either one would be a vast improvement. No gaming done on it. But some PhotoShop, so the added L2 memory seems nice.

Unless you want to wait another 6 months or so buy the 2.8C. That will hold you untill Tejas for your next upgrade.

Prescott is being launched on Feb 2. It is supposed to launch at 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, and 3.4GHz. On the same day, Intel will also introduce a 3.4GHz Northwood at the same price as the 3.4 Prescott. I suspect the prices will also be the same for the lower speed Prescott chips. This is part of Intel's strategy to quickly transition to 90nm Prescott.

Also, I suspect the speed of Prescott will not be significantly better than similarly clocked Northwoods, but you will be getting SSE3 and improved HT.

I would say wait. Only a month away and if the X-bit lab report is correct the price will be right. If Prescott flops, you can always buy the northwood later.

Anxiously awaiting prescott....is it here yet?

Those prices are only MSRP, retailers can adjust them whichever-whichway they want. Chances are they will jack the prices up if Intel advertises well (they will), so don't count your chickens before they hatch. Oh yeah!...no one knows how good the performance really is on Scotty.

TomV, wait until benchies are out before you decide.

Why dont you consider an A64 3000+ ?
It beets the crap out of a P4 3.2GHz and is much cheaper...
Unless you like trowing money out of he window go for P4 :o)

I realize nothing can be done about retailers jacking up the prices on hot items, but I honestly don't think we will see much of that. If the market is flooded with cheap Prescotts, retailers will have so much competition they won't be able to do any price fixing.

Intel will advertise, people will buy (witnessed by Centrino), prices will be skyhigh.

I expect the 3.4Scotty will be a good $100 more than the 3.4Northwood, even though their MSRPs are both $417.

Eventually prices will fall when the retailers decide to compete (a la 3.2C).

Don't jump the gun with Scotty, we don't know performance, OCing ability, price, or even some mobo compatibilities yet. Wait a few weeks.

How about the fact that every...single...motherboard for the A64 currently on the market is junk?

Do you have something to prove the A643000+ is faster in most apps than the P4 3.2C or are you just trolling again?

well, even I am no smarter than everyone else (did I ever said that?), but I do understand your need to feed yerself with a thought that you are smarter than everyone else in order to keep your mentally disabled body happy.

you can't even figure out that you have to break your line of question marks to keep the page in sink, so it wont go out of borders and we would not have to drug that bottom bar back and forth to see the end of it.

Crashman I really grow tired of your games. I have asked nothing more of you than to answer your previous post...

"How about the fact that every...single...motherboard for the A64 currently on the market is junk"

Stop turning this around and answer my question!!!! Do you or do you not have anything to back this up. YES or NO!!

Why do you keep answering this legitimate question with another question?

Then how can those '32-bit' mobos run 64-bit Linux?? Just a fluke?

dude, I am getting little shaky of you. running software in 64 bit mode on a 32 bit hardware does not give you all the goodies of having the 64 bit setup, can you get it into your head? can you stick 64 bit nic or SCSI into any of the boards you are talking about? or have 64 Gig of ram installed and utilized on those boards? dah..

just for your information.

"While 'image processing' is historically a classic example of a 32-bit operation and ideal when optimized for the AltiVec unit, 64-bit code is commonly associated with 'computational fluid dynamics' (CFD) which includes weather modeling, airflow studies as applied to aircraft design, fluids and particles in motion as with high energy plasmas, nuclear reactions, and hydraulics."

that means that the average Jo will not even need the 64 bit as of right now till some very distant future if that matters.

Do you think that if we combined darko and blah that they would cancel each other out and form one reasonable person?

Or perhaps "it" would be so conflicted internally that it wouldn't know what to say and it would just SHUT UP by default.

Then again, we might just end up with one ultra-confused pain in the ass.

Intel fanboy? Suppose so since I use a Intel processor. But thats neither here nor there, since I plainly stated that the "current" round of A64 (oops missed this:motherboards) sucks.

With considerations everyone in their dog is aware of the nForce3 chipset problems, A64 motherboard BIOS issues, poor overclocking potential of the chipsets, lack of very common features on certain chipsets such a Serial ATA, Gigabit and the like.

Then we have the VIA thing I dont even want to address since its VIA and well its VIA. Theres SIS and ALI they have always been relyable but a bit sluggy on the performance side as well as features. Then AMD's own chipset is lacking.

So when you take all this into considerations plop these issues with the motherboards you end up with a pretty crappy situation.

Its always been this way, AMD's chipset's and their partner chipsets are usually a bit flacky in the begining, their motherboards they offer are a bit slack on features so that they can reach the desired price points of the users they are targeting. Basically to undercut Intel in any which way and form.

Itll get better the second round for AMD and their partners has always been a far better experience then the first...

Plus they cant be perfect like a blue corp we know of.

if the A64 sucks then why does it take the p4 ee to even challenge the 2.2 ghz fx-51?

via's are not the best of chipsets but they were the 1st out...
lets see what happens when presshott comes out eh

You guys are funny; get so touchy about processors, almost like someone called your momma fat or something.

Now I don’t follow the posts that you guys make, and who are the trolls, but darko KrazeIke’s comment was funny. Have no sense of humor? Part of the comment was the fact that you two were polar to each other and it would make for an interesting combination. But who am I to say, maybe he needs to put <sarcasm></sarcasm> to prevent people from taking him seriously.

The AMD FX line is the extreme line, similar to the P4 EE, so it makes sense why it takes a P4 EE to challenge it, almost a DAH on that one. And really, for all intensive purposes, the AMD 64 should blow the P4 out of the water no questions asked because it is a new architecture, and the P4 is beginning to date itself. However the fact remains that is doesn’t. In fact more often than not the P4 will out do the AMD chip…. Makes me think that their whole numbering system is off, where what they call a AMD 3200+ really should be labeled a AMD 3000+. Like other people have said, wait for the Prescott to be making comparisons.

The AMD 64 is only semi 64 any ways. You stick a 64 chip in a 32bit world and you can only use 32bits. Only some of the drivers out there for vid cards have any 64bit support. Windows isn’t even to the 64bit state yet. You can say Linux all you want, but face it, Its not mainstream until MS is behind it. Sad as that might be, it’s the truth. We are not ready for 64bit yet, it’s good that someone is pushing for it, but not there yet. And for all we know, Intel could make its own 64bit system and MS will make that the 64bit extension they support making the AMD 64bit stuff useless. Nothing is future proof.
