Shadow CPU issue -- maybe??

I think I have CPU issues with my Shadow (ie lots of strange goings on).
Can I swap in my Monster Bash CPU board into my Shadow (swapping roms of
course) to see if this fixes some of my problems OR is a WPC-95 CPU board
different from a WPC-S CPU Board.

LMK

Thanks

Completely different beasts, you're not gonna be able to swap the two of
them.

Thanks John.

I kinda figured that was the case. I guess I need to find another WPC-S
game to swap it with and see if these oddities go away.

If you have oddities, I'd stick your shadow cpu into another game ( swap
game rom ) and see if oddities persist. If you put a good different cpu into
your shadow and there is something wrong with the game and not cpu, then
you'll have another cpu with oddities. LTG :)

Nope, you can't. Different board generations, not backwards compatible. Even
if you do find another WPC-S board, it has to be either from another Shadow,
or you need to swap the security (hence the S in "WPC-S") chip with it too,
along with the game ROM U6 chip. What kind of issues are you having, maybe
we can help?

Thanks. I posted this on Sunday with not much success.

Well I finally got my Shadow and I love the game!! HOWEVER......

When I first got the Inner Sanctum magnet was inconsistent. Sometimes it
would grab the ball and vanish it and sometimes it wouldn't. So after
searching of rgp I tried multiple things to fix it and got it working quite
well (leveled it perfectly and aligned it to 6.5 degrees and made some minor
adjustments to the switch).

NOW all the sudden the game has gone completely schizo ....

1) Whenever you shoot the ball up the right ramp it triggers the ball lock
so it basically gives you credit for locking a ball when you didn't

**the above was the only problem for several hours of play last night until
the last 5-10 mins and then all the below started to occur and has continued
into today. Everything else was playing great except this and I played for
at least 3 hours last night.

2) Coils just randomly start going off (slings, divertors, sanctum ball
lock mech, ejector from the right side scoop saucer etc.)

3) I can cup the ball in a flipper and hold then the game will randomly
score points on its own with no movement or contact from me.

4) The game will randomly tilt all on its own.

5) The game will launch multiple balls from shooter, sometimes off the
start and sometimes just at random during play.

This last problem has been a problem since I got it.

6) The extra ball button does not work (ie won't let you buy in). However
if you test it in switch tests it works perfectly. I have checked all
adjustments and have everything turned on thats supposed to be on to make it
work.

**I should mention I have checked all switches and coils in test mode and
EVERYTHING works perfectly. Also I have checked all wires and connections
and everything seems fine. There are no busted/burnt connectors and no
problems to speak of on any of the boards. I do know that oned of the Tip
102s on the main board was replaced before I got it.

I have used both LA-5 and LX6 roms and these problems are still present.

Looking for any help I can get as I have already invested a lot of time in
attempting to diganose whats wrong and fix it -- with no luck.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Interesting... I have never heard of the symptoms you are describing, so as
far as I know there isn't any established procedure to advise you with. Try
this. Do a full factory reset and let the auto burn-in run for a while. Then
power off and power on again.

1) When you checked your switches in the switch edges test... Did you get
any phantom closures (e.g you press one switch and a few of them register).
If, no move on. If yes, which ones?
2) Correct number of balls in the game? 6 of them I believe (running from
memory).
3) Check your ball through too.
4) Is there a 10 opto board underneath the playfield? Check that too.
5) I can cup the ball in a flipper and hold then the game will randomly
> score points on its own with no movement or contact from me. ---> WHAT is
it scoring? What does the game "think" you're hitting? Check those places.
6) The more I read about it, the more it seems you have problem with U20 and
other LM chips wither on CPU board and/or an opto board under the playfield.
Changing game ROM at U6 WILL NOT sure that problem.

But, then again, you say they all work perfectly in test modes so my theory
with U20 doesn't hold much water there. However, you do have to be
absolutely sure there are no multiple switch closures in the switch matrix
test.

But, still coils randomly firing, it still seems like switches associated
with those coils are firing when they are not supposed to, so I'd stick with
thinking it's the switch matrix problem.

7) See this. I don't remember the switch matrix for Shadow, I sold the game
a while back. I bet you a dollar that the TILT and extra ball switch are
either on the same row or the same column as the optos you are having
problems with.

The desperate move (if you have the ASIC removal tool) is to reseat the ASIC
chip, sometimes it helps, sometimes it's dumb, redundant and doesn't do
anything. Don't try to remove it with a screwdriver.

Now, get the sheet with the switch matrix out and start testing. It's sort
of hard for me to "visualize" your problems and advise by typing, it'd be
much easier to be present, so I am sorry if I am a bit off here.

It seems you have to be really methodical here and do problem solving
deducting and narrowing down the problem till you nail it. Switch matrix
havoc, especially hunting it under the playfield is my least favorite task
in refurbishing, and it could be really extremely frustrating. I even like
rebuilding pop bumpers better than that.

Post back if anything changes or improves.

My guess is that the previous owner
mixed up some underplayfield connectors.
I've purchased 3 games at auction
that had that problem. In one instance
a flash bulb connector had been inserted
into a switch connector. When the
software called for the bulb to flash
the switch matrix would go nuts.

Go into switch test and hit each switch
and make sure that what the screen says
is being actuated is what you are
pushing on. Also do a visual inspection
of each connector and look for
connectors where the wire colors don't
match up on opposite sides of the
connector junction. If not, that
connector junction is suspect; not
necessarily wrong, but suspect.
Finally, make sure the connectors on the
boards are plugged into the correct
header. Check the manual to see which
headers are supposed to have connectors
plugged into them. I bought a game that
had that problem too.

Great info fellas. Spent more time working on it while you guys were giving
me info

Here is what I have discovered (have the entire right side of playfield
basically apart).

The suspect switches are 32 & 33 (right ramp and inner sanctum). No matter
which switch your trigger BOTH register in switch test. Upon get the right
metal ramp off (had to since its broken) I can see that one of the optos on
the inner sanctum (right side one if you are in the front of the machine)
has is wires "exposed" they are not cut but the sheathing is missing.
Someone had covered this in electrical tape so I will repair this as best I
can.

ALSO with a full review of the wiring everything is wired correctly (ie
right position on the connector) and all connectors are connected to the
right place on the opto board. I traced the wires for each of these optos
and there are no breaks, exposed wires, disconnects or anything touching
something it shouldn't. I am going to fix the messed up wires on that one
opto and see if by chance that switch issue goes away.

As far as the other stuff goes its very random as I played last night for an
hour and the only problem I had was the right ramp/inner sanctum issue.

Then tonight I played and right of the bat the right sling was just firing
nonstop, the left divertor was switching back and forth on its own, the
inner sanctum kick out was firing nonstop, the battlefield paddle would
randomly bat itself around, and last but not least the shooter would fire
out on its own (no ball but the shooter would fire). Of course random
scoring would go on for all of this as well.

Then it stopped and it worked perfectly for 15 mins or so except the inner
sanctum/right ramp issue.

Still working on it but will knock off soon as I am wiped out.

Thanks for all the additional input so far!!!

Also check switch 23 for those phantom closures. Make sure its not shorted,
legs bent. Etc. ON slingshot, see if it's blades are too short together so
even the slightest vibration will trigger it, increase the gap if so.

Ok latest update is I am working on a local op to let me bring my CPU board
over and pop it in his Shadow and see what happens.

I can say this though ... the CPU board has a battery mounted on a separate
board "above" the main board. As I look at it there is is blue corrosion on
the holder in a few spots -- not on the board itself though.

We'll see what happens but I at least got the right ramp off in all of this
to get rewelded so something good there, LOL!.
