Problem with HP LJ IIp & HP DJ710 and Adobe

I am a local Chapter officer with one of the National Veterans
Organizations. We obtain membership lists and mailing labels by
downloading them from the National Web Site.

Adobe Reader is required to accomplish this. Recently, the national
organization advised that we must upgrade to Adobe Reader 6.0 to
continue to able to d/l the mailing labels.

I deleted my Adobe Reader 5 and installed Adobe Reader 6. Now when I
go on the web site and d/l the items referenced, Adobe reader loads
and the documents come up on screen correctly but when I print them
they are all garbage.

Since the web site required Reader 6 only for the labels, I deleted
Reader 6 and reinstalled Reader 5. Then I tried d/l and printing the
membership list. It printed out perfectly as it always did with
Reader 5. I then deleted Reader 5, reinstalled Reader 6 and tried
again. Same problem, good screen copy, bad printed copy.

Called the national organization and they maintained that I have a
printer problem and that the problem is not at their end.

I have two printers on my system. An old HP LaserJet IIP and a HP
DeskJet 710 running through an "A-B" switch. The printout is garbled
no matter which printer I direct it to under Reader 6.

When I have Reader 6 loaded and open up any other .pdf files I may
have loaded on my computer they print out correctly (except the ones
from the vets' organizations.

I am willing to give up my OLD HP LJIIp and buy a new low-end Laser
printer if I knew for sure that the problem was with my printers
and/or the drivers, but I am not convinced that is the case.

Before pitching out a working printer try one of the printing options available
when printing with Acrobat Reader. When printing, you should see a print
dialog box modified by Acrobat Reader. Check the box to enable "Print as
Image". This is Adobe's first suggestion for solving problems printing PDFs.

If that does not work, some other setting in your system got messed up, but it
is difficult to tell what happened from here... Ben Myers

Thanks for the Reply, Ben. However, I cannot find a dialogue box
with "Print as Image". I looked under every tab I have on Adobe.
Perhaps I should have mentioned that I am running Windows 98 SE2.
That box may not be available under the Win98SE2 version of Adobe.

I did go to the help button and check "Detect and Repair" It came
back with a Error 1904 Module C:\program
files\Adobe\Acrobat6.0\Reader\ActiveX\GbDetect.dll failed to register.
HResult -2147024889. Contact your supposrt personnel.

I do not know how to correct this error.

I don't understand. You have the solution here. Why look for something
else?

I only have a partial solution. The membership list will print under
Adobe Reader 5, however the mailing labels are programmed to be
printed only under Adobe Reader 6 and Reader 6 is apparently not
functioining properly on my machine.

Perhaps I misstated. When you print a PDF, the usual Print dialog box pops up.
Adobe Acrobat Reader and Distiller both do some magic to the Print dialog box,
adding some PDF-specific options including a "Print as Image" check box. If you
don't see the "Print as Image" check box in the Print dialog box, this is a
symptom that something is not installed properly... Ben Myers

I'm still missing it. Just keep both versions of Acrobat Reader installed
and use as appropriate, no?

The labels were designed by the programmer to print on Reader 6 only.
When I try to print the labels with Reader 6, they come out as
garbage. If I try to print the labels with Reader 5, the web site
gives me an error "must use Reader 6".
When I discuss this with the National Hqs, they tell me something is
wrong with my printer. This is spite of the fact that I have two
printers on my computer via an A-B switch and the garbled printing
comes out on both printers.

Ok, sounds like you are trying to print through the plugin in your
browser. Instead have you just tried downloading the file to your
local PC first and then opening/printing it in the stand alone version
6 Reader? Also, have you eliminated the A/B switch as a possible
source of your problem?

YES! Get the A-B switch out of there. Forever. They are only an operational
nightmare. How many times have you wanted to print to one printer and did not
check if the switch was pointed to the other printer? A-B switches also can
mess up the signals that they carry, which may be the case for some odd reason
with Acrobat 6 printing.

Instead, install a card with a second parallel port. PCI parallel cards are
cheap, and ISA parallel cards even cheaper if your system can handle one. My
life here in my small office got 1000% better when I got rid of my A-B switch
and put in a parallel port card years ago. I never looked back... Ben Myers
