Upgrade to Athlon64

I thought I had done my research well enough to determine that the Athlon64 was a good upgrade for my Athlon XP2600+. Although a couple of benchmarks show only minor improvement, most fell through the basement floor. Some won't even run. Doing a clean reinstall of Windows XP didn't help. Anyone have other experience?

ask darko12, that fella knows AMD64 like my five fingers, he knows what "no junk" mobo to use with AMD64 to have it work right as well.

Athlon 64 3000+, Gigabyte GA-K8VT800, 1GB corsair XMS3200 Ram, Nvidia 5600 ultra, 120GB WesternDigital drive, Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS. Don't get me wrong, the system runs smooth as silk, but even overclocked to 2.2 Ghz, the performance is less than desireable. The 2600+ passes it in most benchmarks and when I overclock the 2600+ to 2.2 Ghz it puts the Athlon 64 to shame.

You're right about that. Based on benchmarks posted here as well as elsewhere, I expected a fairly significant increase in performance. Maybe I just read more into it than was there.

I just don't understand upgrades for mere 400MHz (and that's PR in yer case?) in 2.+ GHz range, even there are many "good reviews" about the "gain"

I went back and reviewed the benches again. You're right, it really was a stupid move and money would have been better spent elsewhere. Guess I was just sucked in by the 64 Bit hype.

heh, don't feel tooo bad, caz you gonna quit sleeping at night. when I came into US I've learned that there is a price for education, so just think that you've paid for a good lesson which is "Not everything is gold that is shiny". Hope that helps.

What sucks even more.. is you have no 64 bit apps to really test it out on. But.. then again those things are putting out crazy 3dmark scores.

sometimes better than the FX51

Yup. I always thought that
MORE EXPENSIVE = GOOD QUALITY.
but
MORE PRACTICAL = BEST BUY.
