Looks like multimedia performance will improve while gaming remain the same (potentially worsen)...bad move for Intel. They need to catch up in gaming, not multimedia. Glad to read about the new HT and the larger L2 cache...should come in handy (or at least when the new HT is coded for).

Thanks for the link!

Don`t believe it !
I`m sure if Tom gonna test it, it will surtenly run faster then any other CPU !

Probably...or he'll make a huge deal out of very small wins. It sounds as if it should be faster in multimedia and multitasking...which, if true, means Omid will completely denounce (sp?) the A64 because of it's still inferior multimedia abilities and completely ignore it's largely superior gaming (for his basis of decision). I wonder if he would go so far as to test the P4C and A64 with PC3000 and Scotty with PC3200 and try to hide it in the config page (which few readers read--I'm pretty sure that most forum members read the entire thing).

Anyway, glad I don't play too many games! (but I'm starting to recontemplate the upgrade I planned :frown: )

Prescott is a Pentium 4.

I thought the longer pipeline was a rumour, they've got it down as a fact, when was this confirmed?

Reply to Action_Man

Actually, ...

Fact: Prescott's Pipeline will be longer.
Rumor: Prescott will be no faster than Pentium 4.

So there you have it.

We wont really know untill feb2, will we?

I really don't think performance will be lower, remember that is just one guy's educated hypothesis. If I had to guess there will be a small improvement overall and largeish spike in stuff that isn't solely dependent on MHz (รก la EE).

What I really care about is how well a 2.8GHz Scotty will overclock.

Honestly I'm really looking forward to seeing 46 encoding benchmarks and 4 game benchmarks on THG when the Prescott is released

The prescott will come with 13 new PNI(SSE3), advanced hyperthreading, 64-bit(yamhill), 90nm process, and 1mb cache. it will cost the same as the P4 northwood at same frequency. sounds dam promising to me, despite having longer pipeline. i can't wait for these babies. As soon as software becomes more optimized for the prescott, this cpu has a lot more potential than Northwoods. and btw, they are both P4s.

Did you reply to me just because I was the bottom person?

I hope so because I've known all that and have been anticipating this processor a lot longer than you have.

Actually, 64-bit Yamhill is still unknown. I doubt it will be enabled if it even exists in Scotties.

Also, it's not advanced hyperthreading, it's maybe enhanced--just two more instructions pertaining to multiple threading. Programs will have to be recoded to utilize these two new instructions (monitor and wait, IIRC), if they plan to reap the benefits of the newer.

The L1 cache will also be doubled, there are rumors of higher latency, but they seem to be merely rumors. The added L2 cache is designed to help when there are more than 2 threads (also when there aren't, but it will be most useful when there are).

I hate to say it, but software optimized for Scotty won't come much sooner than 64-bit software.

It's MSRP is the same--retailers may price as they wish beyond that. I suspect Prescott will cost a lot more more if Intel provides an ample advertising campaign. If Intel doesn't do sh!t (very doubtful), I'd expect it to be only about 5-10% more.

Oh yeah, of course it has a lot more potential than Northwood, it's the next-gen. Why would Intel release a processor that doesn't have a future??

They may both be P4s, but Scotty will always be Scotty to me (no P4D for me unless they make a P4E).

Sorry if you think I'm rude...but unless you just replied to the last post, you were rude too.

Oh yeah, that article explicitly says that Scotty will cost more. Look for 2.8, 3.0 or 3.2...big difference in prices, especially Scotty 3.2 vs. 3.2C (417 vs. 278, respectively). How do you call that equally priced?

sorry Vapor, i am new. i don't quite know how to use reply button, normally i would use add post button, but i dont' seem to see it. lol

anyways, sorry if i sounded rude. i wasn't trying to be. i know that rumor shows that prescott has built in 64-bit registers for 64-bit compatibility on the core. I'm not sure what the official name will be for prescott's HT, but from reading , they named it advanced hyperthreading although enchanced could be used too, it's the same effect. The biggest improvement in prescott to me is the 1mb L2 cache. That should definitely boost FPU calcutations and boost game performance. Prescott is due on February, and they will be price the same as current Northwoods.

I hope SSE3 is a flop. Just becuase i'm a doom and gloom type of person. My RDRAM owns! You'll see.. RDRAM will come back worse than a heart attack.. and you'll be begging for more.
:( no no.. probably not. *sigh* improved HT.. by improved i hope they mean i can notice the difference. :)

Sorry that I was rude...I fully expected that you were somebody trying to show me up after I laughed a RainKing's joke (although probably will be true).

I think the HT will just remain HT--how they advertise the advancement will be interesting. 1MB L2 should be great, maybe better than EE's 2MB L3 (not too sure, but there is less latency for L2 cache). I don't game too much, so I'm not that interested in game performance, but the doubled cache should definitely help almost everything.

The link you posted before says that on Feb 15 the price of 3.2C will be 278 while Scotty will launch at 417. That's a 50% difference, hardly equal. 3.0 SCotty should be about 25% more expensive than the 3.0C and the 2.8 Scotty should be 15-20% more expensive than 2.8C (I'm too lazy to go back to that chart to get the real numbers). The 3.4s should all be about equal, except EE (637 for Scotty, 575ish for Northwood, $999 MSRP for EE).
