Prob with old Presario X-1000; Time to replace?

My wife uses an old Presario X-1000 running Win XP that we've replaced the battery and hard drive when they wore out.
She usues it almost exclusively for word processing, web surfing through our home wireless network, watching DVD's and streaming video (Hulu etc) and it does a fine job with that.

Lately when charging it's developed a high pitched whine. Is this a death toll or a simple matter.
She's thinking of replacing it, but it's a shame to replace what otherwise meets her needs well.

I've been looking at the low end lap tops at New Egg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834114805

Any thoughts, suggestions? She's handicapped and really only uses it at home so battery life and weight aren't issues. Sound quality would be a plus as she watches movies. Larger screen for same reason. We like to keep our tech purchases for years and only upgrade as needed. We're in the Eastern USA. I'm comfortable doing minor upgrades (I changed the harddrive on the old one, am willing to add memory).

Thanks!

Where is the whine coming from, i.e. speakers, etc...? I'd think that it sounds like some sort of interference or it could be just that the AC adapter is on its way out. If you can find a replacement AC adapter for cheap (they can be expensive), give that a try first to see if that gets rid of the whine. On a side note, the links you gave do not work- not sure if its something with newegg's servers or not?

Thanks Buwish. The whine is coming from the back ot the laptop, not the wall awrt of the AC adapter of the box in the middle of the cord.
Someone on the CNET forums suggested the whine could be addressed by shellacing the induction coils. I'll see if my daughter's laptop charger works on my wife's unit and if so, it the whine disappears.
Regarding the links-I have no idea why they're dead. I cut straight from the address line and pasted. They seem to work on some forums and not on others.
