I installed my P4 processor and then put the retail heatsink and fan on. I then quickly noticed that the fan wire was going in the wrong direction so I then took off the heatsink and fan and turned it around. At that moment I noticed that the thermal tape was slightly (very slightly) scratched.

When I spoke to the people at Intel earlier about the thermal tape and the guy had mentioned that the thermal tape would melt and spread into the gaps (it had a few nicks in it originally). Will this happen in my case or do I have to wipe it clean and apply thermal paste?

The computer has not even been turned on yet.

If I do have to start this thing from scratch what is the best way to take the thermal tape off?

I've been told by Intel that this will not be a problem but I would like some confirmation on this please.

Get the written confirmation from Intel with a stamp of approval to turn it on, turn the PC on and see for yourself if Intel people know what they are doing. If it dies, you have a letter which you can use to get a replacement, if it lives for ever, you have a living proof that Intel knows it's job better than AMD.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

No problem. My refurbished Intel heatsink had a slight scratch in the thermal pad, but it still works fine, running at 38-50 celcius overclocked.

Hehe, it melts and fills in the gaps. Really.
