My updates are causing me problems

I recently installed some windows Kernel updates that played havoc with my system. After installing the updates and re-starting, the computer will get to the "configuring updates" stage before informing me that the updates have failed. The computer then re-starts to complete this cycle a few times before finally loading windows. None of the updates or fixes I have got from microsoft have worked. Should I just un-install the updates? Or is there another option?

In case it helps:
I5 3570k
8GB DDR3-1600MHz
AsRock Z77 extreme 4
Western digital Caviar Black 1TB
(All of which is working fine!)

Delete this: C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml

I dont recall if you can do it in SafeMode or if you need to boot off a CD as it has been a while since I had to do it.

It will stop the updates from running. You can then go in and remove the updates, delete them from you system and try downloading and running them individually to find out which one is causing the problem.
