have a dsl connection, and 2 computers

PC1- has the dsl connection (one NIC for the modem, and a second NIC to connect to PC2)
I tried setting up manual IP's and gateway's on both PC's and nothing works. I even tried the XP network wizard, that that doesn't work.

I know it may take some time, but I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a very detailed step by step process of setting my PC's up.

Thank YOu.

You will need to enable ip forwarding on your initial box. Essentially making it a router. You are much better off using DSL router, I recomend the Linsys BEFSR41, it's what I use until I can find one with real NAT. What this router will do is take your dynamic IP that is given to you from your ISP and use PAT (Port Address Translation) to share that IP to all the machines on your network. If you want to move forward with enabling ipforwarding start with this microsoft knowledge base article Q230082. Just go to support.microsoft.com and search for this. It will get you to all the information you need. Or just search on IP forwarding, and Windows XP.

You need to setup internet connection sharing on the DSL side NIC - your 2nd NIC will then become a gateway for the 2nd PC. Don't setup your 1st system as a router as this will not work.

When using internet connection sharing, the 2nd NIC will serve IP addresses via DHCP to client machines (i.e. your 2nd PC). I am not sure of the wizzard under XP, but on 2K it is pretty easy.
