thermal paste application

after watching a couple of the THG videos...i noticed the guy wasnt being all that tedious with the thermal paste. So is applying a paperthin coating over the cpu core a good idea or just unessacary?

Yes.
Thermal paste should be as thin as possible, ideally just good enough to fill up machine marks.

Yes, it sould be as thin as possible but sometimes the surface of the chip/heatsink ins't completely flat, then you should apply more (or, preferably, flattening it)

Got a nice overclocked overvolted system to keep you warm at night? That's great. Guess I'll have to settle for a woman...

Put it on not too thick. Once the heatsink is in place, give it a couple of wiggles. This will spread the compound a little thinner, and ploperly fill the wholes.
