I've just put together the following rig:
P4 2.6 800FSB
Intel D865PERL mobo
512M (2x256 matched pair) Corsair RAM.
I loaded a demo of V-Rally and it runs like a dog. The graphics card is only a GeForce2 440MMX (64M) but I thought I'd still get better performance.
OS is Win2000 (fresh install) and that takes an age to boot even though quick boot is enabled in the BIOS. I've disabled HT as I'm not running XP. Any ideas??

What speed is your RAM?
But so far far I'd say your video card is holding you back. Can you swap it out for another to check?

Game wise it's the video card however Winblows2000 has some problems with the AGP. Try to install a servicepack. the dudes at microsoft say that they'll improve performance...

video card is definatly a problem. the geforce MX series cards SUCK A$$. Go here and check out a R9600PRO. It will make a world of difference to your system.

Also, make sure you are running DDR400 (PC3200) RAM inyour computer.

Spec:
Intel P4 2.4B
MSI 645E Max-U Mobo
512MB DDR333
GF3 ti200 64MB

LG 24x24x32 CDR
WIN2K PRo SP4

i've had some "problems" with my Gigabyte mobo: standard fsb setting is lower than what my xp2500+ has. Maybe there are some things you could do to the BOIS(maybe a update).

Sory for the bad english

The RAM is DDR400 and should be working in dual channel mode though I haven't found a way to confirm this. Might go for an ATI 9600XT. Wish I hadn't gone for the Intel mobo as everything is locked - stay away as overclocking is not possible here! Just showing how much of a novice I am!

Can you return your mobo?

Have you tried something else than game? Depending on your old system you should see a big improvment while doing everyday task. Try to compact a big rar file or something like that. Now if it aint fast doing that you have a problem. But if its only when playing games or graphic intensive task, its easy to pinpoint the problem. Taht video card aint on par with the rest of the system...

I just hope you didnt upgrade from a 2 GHz class cpu, or you will have wasted your money.. at least, until you spend some more a better videocard.

As someone else pointed out, the MX440 is what is holding back your system. This videocard could probably be maxed out be a 1 GHz cpu in most current games at real world resolutions, so getting anything faster while hanging on to your MX is not going to help. Bite the bullet, and get something better. As sparky suggested the 9600 Pro would be an excellent while affordable choice.

As for the booting... windows 2000 is notorious slow to boot. A fast harddisk helps a bit, but its a "known issue". If you can't live with it, upgrade to XP, or use powermanagement and suspend your pc instead of shutting it off each time. Faster cpu or videocard will do squat for your boot times..

Dont disable Ht unless its causing problems, it can only help...Get Win XP pro with a similar system , my WinXP machine boots up in the 20-30 sec range when its clean.(thats the time b4 I can actually use it not when the desktop pops).
