I have a chance to upgrade from a P4 2.53 to a 3.0 800fsb. My question is will I be able to just make the switch or will it upset my computer?

According to <A HREF="http://tw.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/CPUSupportList/CPUSupportList_GA-8INXP.htm" target="_new">gigabyte</A>, no support for 800MHz FSB for this motherboard.

Your mobo has the 7205 chipset, should oc lika banshee. How high have you taken the fsb? The 800fsb cpu should take it a bit higher. Since your mobo supports HT, that might help a little as well.

Hmm...Went ahead and switched chips and the computer seemed to accept it. On checking benchmark (2001 SE) I dropped 5000 pts 15,500 to 10,500?? Games etc. the drop isin't visible. I never OC'd in the past but now might have to. Any ideas??

Hello?? Your motherboard does not support the processor you put in it. You will not be running at 3GHz. Might want to upgrade your mobo, take advantage of the 800FSB.

Spec:
Intel P4 2.4B
MSI 645E Max-U Mobo
512MB DDR333
GF3 ti200 64MB
SB Live 5.1
WD 60GB
Maxtor 120GB
LG 24x24x32 CDR

Your processor speed is 2GHZ and not 3, try overclocking a bit, see what's your limit - be sure to lock the FSB:AGP:pCI ratio and you might be able to get quite far.

Got a nice overclocked overvolted system to keep you warm at night? That's great. Guess I'll have to settle for a woman...

In order to get your processor to full speed you have to overclock your motherboard from 133MHz CPU bus to 200MHz CPU bus. Good luck.

You might have to use Gigabyte's secret key combo to unlock the overclocking menu once you're in BIOS, I think it's Alt-F1 or something.

Congratulations.. you swapped a CPU, and now you'll need to overclock the heck out of your system to get it even close to the speed of your old cpu.. some upgrade :) next time, might want to read the replies before you act..

On the bright side, it seems like you don't really need this kind of performance anyway, if you're not noticing any difference between your old 2.53 GHz and your current 2 GHz cpu
