ok..
what would be better for a pc used for slight gaming (nothing high end) and some CAD work?

a Pentium 4 2.6gnz 800fsb with HT
or
AMD XP 2700+
(the AMD is about $50 cheaper)

For CAD work, AXP 2700+ will be better. In gaming, both are almost equal

It depends a lot on what programs and games you are using. For most stuff, either cpu would be more than enough. If you already have, or know what software you will be using, it is good to see if it is designed better for one chip or the other. The chip can come first, then you get the progs that work best on your system.

P4 2.6 should beat 2700+ in most situations.

i am curently planning to use the p4...but if I was to use the AXP 2700+, would the ABIT is7 be a good choice of motherboard for it

I was going to use the INTEL version of that board for the P4

The IS7 uses the intel 865 chipset. It is quite a good board for P4c chips.
Abit makes the NF7 and AN7 for Amd chips. These use the nforce chipset, and offer great performance and options.

not in gaming. perhaps, like maybe 5% or 10% or even -10% depending on the game engine..

That's a bigger assumption to think i was lying about joking.
Of course intel beats AMd in many situations.
But I don't understand why you would want to be stuck on one company.
I'm all about trying different things.. and i can say with my AMD i'm completely satisfied that i have a 2.2ghz rig scoring 41,500 on aquamark3 and an average 445.4 on performance test.
For a 85 dollar cpu i think i got my money's worth. I play video games and i do the internet thing obviously. It's working for me in everything else i do. It runs corel draw 10 with no hitches at all.
I'm set.
Don't get me wrong.. both of my intel systems still does me no wrong. My 2.8b with 1gb of pc800 rdram still scores 15~16 on 3dmark.
To be honest with you my 2.6c is my problem computer.. but that's not from the cpu.. it's the power supply. The voltages aren't stable.. it drops below 1.5vcore all the time.. in fact it stays below that even though it's set at 1.6
