Change everything except your master drive to cable select.

Give that a shot!

It should work. I have two drives (CD and DVD) as master and slave on
the secondary IDE channel and I can use a bootable CD in either drive
with no problems.

Have you tested the bootable CD in another computer?

Good luck

I thought that it had to be master. It seems that your system confirms that
belief.
What happens when you change the DVD to be the master?

Can you set the DVD to master on IDE#2? I'm not sure that's the problem but
I've got my DVD drive as master on IDE2 and my DVD burner as slave on DVD 2.

My harddrive is alone on IDE1 but I have used a second harddrive on IDE1 as a
slave.

Larry:
What happens if you set your DVD drive as Master on the Secondary IDE
channel? You still can't boot to a bootable CD?

And there's no problem with the DVD drive detecting non-bootable CDs? You're
certain the CD is bootable, e.g., you've used an XP installation CD? Do you
get the "Press a key to boot from CD" message when you have a bootable CD in
the drive?

I take it there's no problem booting to a bootable floppy disk or your
working HD, right?

So, the DVD is a slave, and it is jumpered to be cable select. However, you
inserted the center connector of the cable into the DVD. That causes it to
be a slave.
If that is true, then you need to revise the cabling to make the DVD the
master.

First, set the bios to boot from CD first, not the floppy first.

If you have 2 cd rom drives in a pc, the pc will want to boot from the
first cd it finds in the bios.

In other words, if you have 2 cdrom drives on the same channel the pc
will only like to boot from the master.

Or, if you have 2 cdrom drives on different channels the first one the
bios sees will be the one you use to boot from a bootable cdrom disk. It
wont matter if both are slaves.

Yes I have & 1 difference between that PC & mine is
I'm currently using PM's PQboot to boot from 2nd partition
on HD on IDE#1. 1st partition is HIDDEN.

Having CD as master over HD dont sound right. There r 12
possable combos which I'd hate to go thru 1 by 1!

Nope

I'm sure-both boot on another PC with XP. 1 difference

Just a note on the master setting everyone is promoting, it just might work.
Haven't seen your resulting reply on this compelling suggestion.

My PC is setup primary HD/HD, jumper settings are master/slave accordingly.
Secondary, LS120 optical floppy/DVD burner, master/slave accordingly. Boots
off A: on the LS120, boots CD on the DVD burner. I do not use cable select,
ever.

My DVD burner as many others, provide installation directions that say it
must be installed as the master. In my case, I found it to be false.
Yours, it just might be true.

Have seen no confirmation that the DVD burner of yours works in windows XP
with no discrepancies. Have not seen any information regarding the "master"
device on the same ide cable as your DVD burner. Have not seen any info
regarding the boot CD, that is, is it visible in XP itself if CDFS is
installed in addition to the boot part of it. I'm not guessing without more
info.

A boot manager has no effect on this mentioned on another reply of yours.
Its entirely on the hard drive.

EE friend says "when u mix CD & HD on same IDE, CD must be
slave on IDE1 or master on IDE2" for it to boot. This seems
to jive with all configurations that work 4 others.
Time 4 a test.

I'm not sure your friend is completely correct. I have my DVD ROM on IDE2 as
master and my DVD burner on IDE2 as slave and either will boot on a bootable
CD so the slave on IDE2 will boot.
