My Windows 7 professional was working fine (ish) until i formatted the hard drive and re installed . Windows now says my copy of Windows is not genuine although I carefully put the same Serial code in.

We can't help you. If your serial is good(correct for your system), the only option is to call Microsoft.

Try again and make sure your serial is exactly as is on the box.

If this is an OEM Pro licence, you normally only get one auto-activation, after that you will need to contact Microsoft and explain that you reinstalled. if they are happy, they will provide activation code.
