Hello,

I was wondwering how valid a cd ripping speed test is for comparing system performance. Me and my brother thought it would be a good way to test all of the components in a computer.

To test, we ripped 'Bat out of hell ||(Meatloaf)" to mp3 at 192kbps on my athlon 2500 xp|a7n8x deluxe|512mb DDR "400"| Lite on dvd/cd-rw combo drive|Old, cheap 40gb Maxtor Harddrive and on his 15" 1GHz Powerbook G4

The powerbook was almost twice as fast at ripping the cd as my own computer. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact timings.

Heh, you realize your are comparing a dual cpu system vs a single cpu system?

Performance depends a lot on software used for ripping and also DAE (digital audio extraction) performance of CD drive.

If you want to compare audio encoding performance between two computers, then compress an exactly same uncompressed WAV file to MP3/AAC/OGG with same encoding software (also same version)

I forgot to mention that we did both use iTunes(latest versions for windows and Os X 10.3.) I wonder just how similar the programs are since one was compiled for ppc and one for x86.

Shite, my bad. I thought i just read through it and thought g4. :/ Sorry mate.

Well then it appears there is something wrong there. ^^
But i've only done a lot of cd ripping with intel systems and i know it only took a minute with my 2.8533 rdram system. In fact it took me under two minutes for my Modest Mouse cd that's almost a good cd and a half compared to a normal cd.
