Hello everyone. I am planning on building a new computer after this tax season. This systems main use will be for playing games that are currently out (i.e. Halo, Knights of The Old Republic) at atleast medium quality. I only have $1000 budget so the Athlon 64 is not an option. I have completed my system at newegg (only place I shop online at) and it came out to $986.99 w/shipping included. What I need is for someone to double check my choices and make sure everything is compatible. Also if anyone has a different idea, as to which components I should choose, I would appreciate it. :)

Shopping Cart (don't know if the link will work on other computers because of cookies):

Getting a 3200 athlon xp barton is waste of $$! For that money you could easily get yourself a 2.6 ghz p4 with 800 mhz FSB or even a 3 ghz p4. Those 2 would kill of 3200 XP easily!! I would suggest you get the 2.6 for $175 and spend the extra cash to get a good MB for the P4.

Also the way to put links here is to use and close with a /url in the brackets.

I would say no to the video card, go with a ATI, such as a 9800 pro xt. Check ouy toms vga charts. Also, spend a few bucks more on a better mouse/keyboard. It's worth it.

Personally, I have had terrible luck with AOpen and BenQ products. (All the siblings of Acer). I do like my AOpen full-tower, but that's about it. ASUS for MB, ATI for video, Sony DRU-510A DVD/CD Burner, and WD or Samsung for HD. You can buy the DVD-RW cheap now and you will want one sooner or later. A combo drive will take up less space and only one port. The Sony is the best CD burner I have ever had. Best of luck, but unless there is a real need, I would save my bucks for the "next greatest thing that is sure to arrive this year"

I don't like Sony i think there overpriced.. for burner i would Deff choose a LiteON...... Liteon 411s which is extremely low, and the LiteON 811s which is still very nicely price at somewhere around 130$... ive burnt over 90 movies and also regular data discs with this burner and it rocks, not one coaster over 150 movies

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
80gb Maxtor
200gb WD 8mb cache..
Lian-Li PC-60
Lite-On 52X
AMD XP2800+
LeadTek GeForce 4 Ti4200 w/vivo 128mb 8x
Hitachi CML174
1 GB Corsair XMS PC3200 Cas2

mainly a good configuration.
*The geforcefx5900xt is inferior to the sapphire 9800 pro(which you can buy for about the same price).

*The samsung HD has only a 2mb buffer-get one with an 8mb buffer.

*the barton is still ok;but the 800fsb intels are better and the amd athlon 64 3000 is better than both and in your price range.

* Buy a better brand of mobo(abit, asus, msi or gibabyte);but do the research on it.

$$$ Note if you do go for a amd64 that they need to be run at relaxed timings(see mushkin site) and that none of the mobos for it are supporting sata hds like they should(they're using too much of the cpu and are under performing;but with a single udma hd you'll have no problem)

Avoid the ecs mobos(not really bad;but they released the ecs 755-a claiming it supported ddr400 when it only supports ddr333),there're the elite group, the same group which Jim Peterson represents(I lol at the people buying celerons for $1600 when he sold p4s with 800fsb the next day and at the same price);but if you do buy some of their stuff remember they're GREED INC and cann't be trusted being too tricky to deal with.

This links take too long to load. I did look at the boards. Here's what I suggest to get the most performance for your dollar:

Abit NF7-S version 2.0 (includes the MCP-T southbridge with nForce APU DSP).

Athlon XP2500+, overclocked to 3200+ speed (this overclock is 99% certain to be stable at moderate temperatures and voltages)

1 or 2 512MB PC3200 modules (pick your favorite brand)

Western Digital WD1200JB hard drive.

Radeon 9600XT video card.

You can spend a lot more to get less performance. You can spend a lot more to get equal performance. If you're REALLY picky, you can spend a LOT more to get a LITTLE more performance.
