Well, from one problem to another

well as you can tell i get this error when i try to update, also 25 important updates didn't install when i tried.

i also can not locate the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) in the services window, i know that a lot of people have had this issue but no fixes have been seen.

EDIT: now 27 updates FUUUUUU

Nup, still absolutely nothing. this is really annoying me. i know its to do with the BITS program thingy though

I've had a similar problem only in the last few days. I was missing upward of 30 updates, and regardless of what I did, it wouldn't update windows.

I tried a number of fixes, and eventually (with some luck) managed to get it fixed.

Started with this WU fixit tool

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updates

then, searched the MS site for the BITS fixit tool. Ran both, and rebooted and hey presto windows began updating again.

I hope this helps.

EDIT: Additionally here's the name of the BITS Fix : Windows6.0-KB940520-x86-ENU can't seem to find the page now.

i already had the Bits fix it tool and i used your link aswell and nothing happened, no BITS file and no updates :/ gonna have to keep searching.

okay, there is an additional step that may be required. But doesn't seem to be a fix for everyone with this problem.

you must delete the windows update folder: c: windows/software distribution/downloads

it is safe to delete this folder.

Reboot your pc, and try the fixes once more, then reboot, and hopefully that will kick the Windows Update into action. You may have to download/install previous updates, but that is minor if the fix works.

i just followed these steps again to no avail, when it finish the WU Fix it tool it said there were 2 out of 4 issues fixed, these issues are: http://imgur.com/1cC51

I realize this is an old post, but I wanted to add to it as I found this post that worked for me, and I didn't see this solution posted on Tomshardware anywhere.

The directions from Pixel are what I followed and it ended a week of frustration for me!

Sorry but all those option does not work. you have to download that Win 7 BITS REGISTER to run it on your pc and try again. Of Course BITS might not be the only one missing. I solved this issue many times for my company clients. Try look if your windows firewall still works. Same goes for your scanner updater.if i can find that link again i post it.

Download that and extract it to a folder where you can easily find it.
Double click on BITs.reg and restart PC and try again.
Posted below. BTW i read some other pages regarding this windows update error and most of the time i see re install which isn't needed. All they gotta do is follow Tutorial below. Also it let me thinks that those who said re-install aren't advanced IT.

Common problems:
-Updating Anti Virus package failed
-Error message Error: 0x80070424 when turning on Windows Firewall configuration screen
-Error 5 at turning on Windows Firewall service
-Can not run Windows Update
-Missing registry keys
Solution:
-Error Error: 0x80070424 when turning on Windows Firewall configuration screen:
Step1:
 Turn a TDSKILLER and MBAM and remove all malicious files
 / / WATCH OUT WHAT YOU ARE DELETING , WRONG SELECTION CAN CRASH YOUR COMPUTER

Step2:
Download the following registry keys and execute them to the customer:

Windows Firewall registry key:

Base Filtering Engine:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/7/BFE.reg

Step3:
Open regedit and go to: HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE_ \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ services \ BFE and then right click the folder BFE and give permissions to "Everyone" with full rights.

Step4:
Restart the computer and go to services.msc. Start the Base Filtering Engine service then the Windows Firewall service. Now Windows Firewall should be working.

Error 5 when starting Windows Firewall service in services.msc up:
 If it does not work and get error 5 at startup of Windows firewall service, then download this file and run it:

Then you go back to the regedit path: HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE_ \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ services \ SharedAccess
Right click the folder and then to Access Shared permissions and the name "Everyone" and then give full right.
Then restart the computer and try services.msc again and start the Windows Firewall service restarts. Then test if it works.

-Updating Anti Virus package failed

related problems and causes:
-Wrong time set on the computer
-Security Center service has disappeared or not started

Solution:
Step1:
Check to date on the computer right corner. Update if it is necessary.
Otherwise Security Center registry key download:

This file execute and click Yes.

Step2:
Windows Defender registry key:

Step3:
Then restart the computer and run the anti-virus update.

Related causes:
-Bits register is not available
-Windows update service is not
-Windows Update Service is missing

Solution 1:
Step1:
Go to services.msc and search for Windows Update service and start meeting.
If that is not between this then download this file and run it:

Then look also at the same time to Bits and see if that also in the list or not. If not, download it from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/7/BITS.reg and run it.

Step 2: Restart the computer and enter services.msc and check that all services on or not. If not, start bits first then Windows Update Services.

Step3: Start Windows Update and check for updates, you can search / download and install.
Oplossing2:

check if the folder: C :/ windows / software distribution hidden or not. If that is hidden, make sure that it is not.

XP:
 Go to services.msc, search index services on, and right properties, disable and stop, apply, ok
Win7:

Oplossing:
-Foutmelding Error: 0x80070424 bij aanzetten van Windows firewall in configuratie scherm:
Stap1 :
Draai een TDSKILLER en MBAM en verwijder alle malafide bestanden

Stap2 :
Download het volgende register sleutels en voer ze uit bij de klant:

Error 5 bij opstarten van Windows Firewall service in services.msc:
Mocht het niet werken en krijg error 5 bij opstarten van Windows firewall service, dan dit bestand downloaden en uitvoeren:

Dan ga je weer naar regedit naar de pad: HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE_\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\service\SharedAccess
rechterklik op de map SharedAccess en vervolgens naar machtigingen en daar de naam “Iedereen” toevoegen en dan volledige machten geven.
Start vervolgens de computer opnieuw op voer de services.msc opnieuw uit en start de Windows firewall service opnieuw op. Test dan of het werkt.

-Verkeerde tijdstip ingesteld op de computer

Vervolgens start de computer opnieuw op en voer dan de anti virus update uit.

-Kan geen Windows update uitvoeren
Gerelateerde oorzaken:
-Bits register is niet beschikbaar
-Windows update service staat niet aan
-Windows update service is verdwenen
- error 80070005 kan windows update niet uitvoeren

Stap1:

Vervolgens zoek ook tegelijk naar Bits en kijk of die ook in de lijst staat of niet. Indien niet, download het vanuit hier: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/7/BITS.reg en voer het uit.

Stap2: Start de computer opnieuw op en ga naar services.msc en kijk of die services allemaal aan staat of niet. Indien niet, start dan Bits eerst op dan Windows update services.

Stap3: Start Windows update en kijk of je updates kan zoeken/downloaden en installeren.
Oplossing2:
- error 80070005
kijk of de map : C:/windows/softwareDistribution verborgen staat of niet. Als die verborgen is, zorg ervoor dat die niet zo is.

Oplossing3:
XP:
Ga naar services.msc, zoek index services op, rechtermuisknop en eigenschappen, uitschakelen en stopzetten, toepassen, ok
Win7:
Hetzelfde als bij XP, maar dan met de Windows Search service in plaats van de index service.
