Boosting wireless signal

Forum Networking : General Discussion Boosting wireless signal

I installed a Linksys Wireless Access/Router/Switch in my parents house. One computer is quite far from the Router and has very poor signal quality. I wan't to put a better antenna on the Wireless NIC but I have found so many different kinds that I have no idea what to get.

Any recommendations? Plus, they range form $65 up into the hundreds... and, will a better antenna help? ...and, should I put it on the Router or the NIC?

Thanks

FWIW, I was told that you should take the 2 antennas on the WAP and put them perpendicular to each other - i.e. one would be vertical, the other would be horizontal. Try it out, it doesn't cost anything.

Yeah, been there with the WAP. Done all the antenna adjusting but it hasn't gotten me where I need to be.

I don't like the idea that the antenna on the NIC is actually "on the NIC" instead of on a cable. Seems that being so close to the case and all the high frequency stuff would cause issues.

Depending on the card/etc. I use the buffalo/melco inc. antenna. It uses a small connector on the cards. I don't know if all cards are identical. All antenna seem pretty directional, the flat one gave me best signal strength.
