should i remove the battery from the cpu board all together?
If so, do I need to replace it?

Remove the battery ASAP before it can do/does anymore damage to your circuit
board. You don't need the battery, but you won't be able to save high
scores and will lose any credits that were on the machine. The battery
function can be replaced with a capacitor or an external battery pack with a
blocking diode. See www.marvin3m.com and check the Gottlieb system80 page
and it will talk in depth about removal of the battery and fixes.
