its not cpu related. id have to wait 4 days if i posted it in teh right section

if i have a 80gig hdd with 2megs/cache and i raid'd it with a 80gig with 8megs/cache, would there be a benifit from the 8megs/cache? or would it just be like having two 80gig/2meg'cache drives?

answer me you fools! before i unleash my penis on your kittens =)

My guess is it will basically perform like 2 2Mb cache drives. On a stripe set, performance is limited by the slowest component. The 8Mb drive might have half the data you are requesting ready in its cache, but you'll still have to wait until the 2 Mb drive has finished reading the other sectors. unless, you are only requesting 1 sector which happens to be on the 8 Mb drive. fat chance...

yea thats exactly what i thought...

altho, when i asked like 5 people in the #tomshardware irc, they all said it would actually be like having 2 4mb cache drives approx...

i was like "uhm..no"

because, once the 2mb drive has its cache drained, then the 8mb drive has to wait while its read heads catch up.

thanks for confirming what i thought

When using striping, every file is chopped in pieces (size is configurable on most RAID controllers), and spread out over the disks that make up the stripeset. Basically, as long as your file is at least twice as big as whatever cluster size you defined, half the file will be on disk A, the other half on disk B, interleaved. So when you start reading (or writing, same idea), the faster disk may give you cluster 1-3-5-7,.. but those are no use as long as you have to wait for clusters 2-4-6-8,.. from the slower drive. In fact, I doubt the controller will even supply "3" if it hasnt read cluster "2" yet.

So its not out of the question you'd get better performance in some situations disabling the stripe set all together, and using the 8Mb drive alone...

yea, exactly

and as for using the 8meg drive alone.. ill have to test both. im sure loading games will be much faster in raid :), even if both drives are treated like they only have 2mb cache

Random access is likely faster on a single 8 Mb, sequential read/writes will be better with the raid. Depends on your useage patterns, but yes, game loading sounds very much like (mostly) sequential to me.

I'm still waiting!

PS: BTW I also have a WD80JB, yay!
Get two of them instead of the BBs. 3 Year warranty at least so your new ones don't crap out with no future like the last one.
