You'll also run into problems if you don't have the MAIN CHIPSET DRIVER for the motherboard. If in doubt, find the proper driver and reinstall it first.
Usually you have these three choices:
1) go to your motherboard or laptop support site (exact model) and find the drivers for WINDOWS 7 if they exist there (64-bit or 32-bit as needed)
2) If no Windows 7, try Vista versions.
3) If neither exist, find the EXACT network adapter you have and go to the company that made it looking for drivers (i.e. INTEL or whomever).
