unstable desktop settings

About a week ago, my display settings went weird. I have Windows XP Pro and
it's worked fine for the last 2 years. A week ago, I turned the computer on
and my icons were rearranged, fonts smaller and windows no longer maximized
in IE. It had worked fine the day before and I had done nothing to change
any settings. Now the desktop is frequently disarranged and the same other
problems appear. I reset everything each time, but it keeps reoccurring.
Any ideas?
