first thx , for reading my post. im still stranger right here n i've been told by my friend that in this community people really2 gave advice for starter like myself. here's the thing:
i'd like to build DIY pc but still confuse abot the spec for my DIY, so if anyone can help me with this im very2 grateful
id like to buy:
processor
p4 3.0c ht or athlon xp 3200
mainboard
Abit IC-7G or GA-7knnxp
memory
kingston hyperx3500k2/1g cl2 dual kit OR kingston hyperx3500/512 x 2 ( not dual kit )
STORAGE
120 gb barracuda seagate 7200.7 sata or 80gb barracuda seagate 7200.7 sata
GRAPHIC CARD
*leadtek geforce 4 ti4400 128mb
MONITOR
samsung 19df
*currently owned
the problem is
1 what should i choose for the memory? the dual kits, or the not dual kits? ( i really want the benefit from dual channel technology)
2 if any one have experience with any of the spec above please give me some advice
3 or kingston 3200 should be enough? ( considering the fact that im not really into OCing, maybe in the future)
4 any advice would be very appreciated
processor
p4 3.0c ht or athlon xp 3200 - I think an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ is best here, avoid the xp3200, its overpriced, and not as quick as the p4 3ghz.
mainboard
Abit IC-7G or GA-7knnxp - again if an amd64, the Ali chipset is good, the sis I believe is the fastest but the via chip based boards often have the most features (on board raid, 5 chanel sound, firewire, usb2...)
memory
kingston hyperx3500k2/1g cl2 dual kit OR kingston hyperx3500/512 x 2 ( not dual kit )
STORAGE
120 gb barracuda seagate 7200.7 sata or 80gb barracuda seagate 7200.7 sata - why not 2 x 80gb seagate barracuda,in a sata raid 0 configuration, in theory halves drive read speed GRAPHIC CARD
*leadtek geforce 4 ti4400 128mb - worth hanging on to if you're not a big gamer.
MONITOR
samsung 19df

get 2x512; but I am not sure I'd spend money on such high spec modules, if you're not going to overclock PC3200 will do just fine. Difference between CL2 and CL2.5 may also not be worth the price premium.

I wouldnt recommend the Athlon XP 3200+ at this point. Depending what you are going to do with your machine, either the Pentium 4 or the Athlon 64 would be better options. if you'r a gamer, I would definately consider the Athlon 64 3000+, it will be faster than the AXP 3200+ or P4 3.0 for roughly the same cost, and it runs cooler and is more future proof to boot. Have a look at THGC buyers guide (sticky post in this forum).

Going with Intel buy the Abit IS7 Mobo. Will save you money to buy better vid if you want. Mem HyperX PC3500 2X512 that's what I have. Matched pair to much money. Rest of your system looks good. Do you plan on doing alot of gaming?
thx very much
, but you didnt mention about my spec memory, im really confused there, i mean if i buy the non pair would they have the same power that dual channel bring to the dual kits version ?
and i'm more into p4 than xp because, i heard thart 875p and 865pe support prescott, is it true?
hey thx man.
so you mean that even im not buying the dual kit, i could get the performance of dual channel?
and could you please tell me if i buy pc3500 in mother board that support only to pc 3200, it would be a waste?
hardware boss, why dyou prefer 865pe chipset (is7 mobo)?correct me if im wrong but i think for performance memory the best is 875p. based on your experience on 512x2 not dual kits, is the performance can match the dual kits?
and correct me if im wrong , isnt the not dual kits more expensive than the dual kits?
P4 needs dual channel memory to boost the performance while if you will use AMD64 3000+ or AMD64 3200+ then you do not need dual channel since it only supports single channel. stay away from AMD 3200+ since u can buy better cpu (AMD64 3000+) almost at the same price.
if you are going to overclock then you need fast memory (2-2-2-5) but any fast memory pc3200 2x512 will cost you between US$260-300, if you are able to buy pc3500 then go for it but you should also look for the fastest timing available.
if you are not overclocking, then any pc3200 (2-3-3-6) will be fair enough for you.
in order to decide which cpu you should buy, you need to decide what applications you are going to run, in general if you encoding audio and video heavily or using 3dmax and PS7 then P4 will serve you better (although some AV applications show better performance on AMD64), if you are into games, business applications and general usage then AMD64 should be your choice.
again, decide what you want to do with your computer and lot of users here will help you to choose which cpu is better for you.
by the way, which country you live? as the price we refer into here is inside USA only and maybe in your country the price performance deal is different than USA
