When I read it I could not believe it.

If I glanced at a spilt box of tooth picks on the floor, could I tell you how many are in the pile. Not a chance, But then again I don't have to buy my underware at Kmart.

Well - I won't belive in this before i see some Machines for sale on the webpage :)But afterall i think it's a good idea so that dell-customers are left with more and wider choices.

If AMD cant meet Dells quantity needs I couldnt see why not. But then that causes costs to go up since they have to design around two platforms. Dell became #1 because of their ability to keep costs down and produce mass.

Dell will lose customers if they dont sell Opteron`s.
Look at any benchmark between Xeon and Opteron, the Xeon gets smacked around so it isnt nice to see anymore.
People who buy servers know this and want the best performence for their money.

Customer’s vs. internal cost increases isn’t always clear cut. Dell also sells more to corporate users last I checked not HPC users.

Regardless of what you think you have to look at the costs associated with adding an entirely different product line. With considerations that Dell has always been an Intel only shop. Even when the Athlon was beating the P4 into the ground not so long ago still says Dell is sticking with Intel.

It also must been seen if AMD can meet the quantity demands that Dell would place on them 200,000 CPU's for 1-3 months might be very hard for AMD to swallow.

Then there is the marketing, training, Q&A, yada yada and some more yada. Big money for a possible niche customer demand.

I don't think that AMD need to supply in the millions of Opterons to meet the supply demand from Dell, afterall AMD has enough production power to feed the relatively small server market. (95% of market= dekstop 5% of market= servers/workstations)

well i dont see how it would only be a niche segment of demand. the only reason it is now is becuase its not used at mainstream pc companies, such as dell. if anyhting, its free marketing for amd. and if anyone can sell amd chips it would be dell, they have done fine selling intel chips. but i do know that they have lost seveal customers that were looking for amd chips, one of the reasons these custom pc companies have sprung up is to meet demand for amd type machines.

I wouldn't put it past Dell to make a success of anything. After all they stay near the top and their entire home desktop line comes with crappy graphics cards unless you upgrade. Common, a $1700 XPS "Ultimate Gaming system" that comes standard with a P4 3.2C and an FX5200. That should about do in anyones credibility, yet Dell sells on.

45.5k mark? 85 dollars went a long way. So did that extra 15 dollars for cooling my video card.

I'm not holding my breath. I'm just guessing here but I think Dell is just throwing that out there to get better pricing from Intel's Xeon. Dell needs the advertising dollars Intels supplies them with so I don't see Dell changing very easy. Either way it will hurt Intels bottom line less mula for the Xeon or less Xeon's sold.

I'm hoping Dell sells (offers) the Opteron but I will believe when I see it.
