My computer recently got a virus so bad that it would reboot every time I ran a virus scan and sometimes randomly other times. I formatted my HDD to start from scratch, only to now find out that my Windows XP and my Windows 7 discs will not install. They both freeze up within the first few seconds after a CD boot. It is an SATA DVD/ROM drive, but that should not cause a problem should it?
It doesn't sound like you had a virus - sounds more like a hardware issue. Generally random restarts are memory faults or bad power supplies, but with the freezing occurring during setup, I'm thinking more along the lines of memory. I would run memtest and perhaps a hard disk diagnostic.
This may sound like a noob question, but how can I run anything when I have no OS and can't get it to boot from CD? Maybe random was not the right word, it would restart if I tried to open a program while Windows was starting up for example. Is that a memory issue?
