Take a look at the Dell Studio 15 (model 1558). $700 can get you Core i3 330M CPU, 3GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB HDD, Intel HD Graphics and a 15.6" 1920x1080 display. About 5.5lbs and 3.5hrs battery life.
For $764 you can whip up a HP G72T Core i3 350M CPU, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Mobility Radeon HD 5430 Graphics and 17" 1600x900 LCD. About 6.6 lbs and 3.5hrs battery life if you shut down the graphics card.
I also think that the Dell Studio 15 would be a great choice. It has a fast processor, 4 GB RAM, and 500 GB hard drive space. The Sony Vaio NW is another great option. It has similar specs, although not as powerful of a processor. It has other cool features such as creative tools and sorting features.
