I recently upgraded a PC from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP
Professional. This PC (PC1) is on a network of 3 PCs. All 3 PCs are now
using Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Prior to the upgrade, peer to peer
networking was working between the PCs. I am now unable to access one of
the computers (PC3) from PC1 (this recently upgraded one.)
Prior to the upgrade, all of the work on PC1 was done under the
administrator account. I have created a new account under XP for use on PC1.
It has administrator privileges. Under this new account, I can access PC2
as I did in the past, but I can no longer access PC3. All 3 PCs are shown in
the workgroup, but when I click on thePC3 icon, access is denied with the
following message: “\\PC3 is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to
find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied.†In addition,
the shared folders on the 3rd PC are not displayed in My Network Places on
PC1.
PC3 can access PC1 and the shared folders do appear in PC3’s My Network
Places.
In safe mode with networking, and logged in as the administrator, the shared
files on PC3 are available to PC1. However, I cannot log into PC3. I get
the same error message. I also have noted that the new account with
administrator privileges is not available in the safe mode, only the
administrator and an account for PC2 established prior to the upgrade.
I have rerun the network setup wizard on each of the PCs. I have verified
the settings for sharing of the files on PC3 and they appear to be correct.
I would assume that the ability to access them from PC1 in safe mode also
verifies them. I have also disabled internet security in Norton on PCs1 & 3
and as part of a test, disabled the Windows firewall on PC1 and PC3. None of
theses steps has helped.
I should also note that sharing between PC2 and PC3 is also a problem and
the symptoms are the same. PC3 can access PC2 but not visa versa. PC2 was
also upgraded from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Professional
several months ago. The user of this PC also worked as the administrator
prior to the upgrade. I do not know at what point the sharing between PC2
and PC3 became unidirectional as sharing between them is very infrequent.
Finally, this is a mixed wired and wireless network. PCs 1 & 2 or on a
wired segment and PC 3 is on a wireless segment. However, I have replaced
the wireless segment with a cable and the symptoms have not changed. Thus
the wireless link does not appear to be a problem.
Where do I look next? I suspect something related to the accounts on PCs 1
& 2 since they worked prior to the upgrades and it appears to work in the
safe mode
