Why are the people here saying that the socket 754 will die at the end of 2004? Does this mean that amd will only use socket 939 and 940 or what?

The socket 754 will only support up to Athlon 64 3700+ on the AMD roadmap. This might change, but socket 939 will be the "mainstream socket" for AMD64 and the socket 940 will continue to support Opteron CPU.

So then isn't amd just wasting money on the s754? If their not going to use it for a few years. I mean check out how long the s462 lasted.

Also, then buying a s754 system is out of the question right? Because it will become unsupported.

but by the time it become unsupported, then new motherboard with newer feature will be out and you'll end up upgrading not only the CPU, but the entire kit...mobo/cpu/ram. So dont worry too much. ans it is easier to sell a complete kit than just a cpu, so you could be able to sell your old kit to a friend that want a computer and all he would need will be, storage devices, video card and other stuff for a minimal cost. That the way I do thing. I get the best for what I could afford now and dump everything later whend I upgrade.

AMD in the past has been known to hold to thier sockets. How ever things have changed AMD now has alot of stuff going on and I think they understand what they are doing. Yeah the sockets are going to change in around a year or less but thats a year + life span of the s754. Intel has had shorter life spans of some of their sockets. Anyway Right now things are all messed up and confusing. Wait tell the dust settles to truely see the picture of whats going on. But from my stand point I see that AMD just put out the s754 so that they could release their low end proccesors before the s939 was ready to go. Once the s939 comes out I think they are going to stick all of the destop chips on that. Also you are going to see Athlons running on the s939 that don't use 64bitness. I hope that the Athlons run at good prices. The way I see it the s754 is just a tast of the future for AMD.

Since Nforce 3 250 is being ported to socket 754, I doubt that socket is due to expire all that soon. The a64 is now slatted to go to 4000+ on 754, and Amd is going to be moving the xp chips to that platform as well.

The Socket754 platform is not a bad choice at all right now. If you buy a A64 3000+ with a VIA based motherboard. You will have a great PC for at least a year. And if you will need to upgrade it you will be able to buy a A64 3700+ later.

The Socket754 is a good choice if you upgrade every year or so. If you play to keep your PC for a long time (2-3 year) this might not be the best platform. But, Intel is in the same situation right now, you can't buy a P4C/E platfor thinking that you will be future proof with it.

If you plan to keep your system for a long period, wait until late April or May and buy Socket939 (for a premium). Otherwise, get the Socket754 with a damn good A64 3000+ and enjoy the ride!

So.....theoretically the old socket A XPs will drop in price? So I could pick up a 2600 M or 2400 to replace my xp 2000 for less than 50 quid? Wooo!

Maybe, but I think you might want to upgrade sooner. I currently own a little 1800+ O/C to 2400+ and I think I will need more juice to run FarCry. I don't have it right now, but I plan to get it within 2 weeks, if my PC can't run it well... I will probably buy a new GPU (probably 9600PRO/XT) and if it's not enough I will buy a Mobile 2600+ and I will try to run it at 2.6GHz.
