Backing up PDA to SD Card. Using BackupBuddy?
Last response: in Cell Phones & Smartphones

I have a Palm M505 that has stopped talking to it's cradle. I want to back
up the image of the system to a SD card and then to my desktop. I have
BackupBuddy that I have paid for, but for some reason the program on the PDA
says that it's expired. My question is, what can I do to install a backup
program on the card that will save an image of what is on the Palm? Can
anyone think of a way that I can do this with BackupBuddy or is there
another application that would work?

There are several available. I like BackupMan. I use it to do a
scheduled backup every morning before I wake up, so I have a fresh backup
every day. It's only $10, IIRC. Red Feline is a freeware backup app,
but I've never tried it. There are others available, which Google should
find for you.

I could understand why you wouldn't want to take this advice after paying for a
BackupBuddy version that doesn't work, but the *free* version of BackupBuddy
will image the PDA memory to a SD card just fine. I use it on my Palms. Further
it puts all the files in a neat backup folder on the SD card so that you can
selectively restore files if you wish by using the free program Filez.

When recommending a backup program, it would be immensely helpful if people
would state whether they've actually have done a full restore from it.
There's a lot of backup solutions (both in the Palm world and PC world) that
look fine until the day you have to do a restore.
Another thing worth mentioning is how the backup programs handle device
changes. The standard Palm backup handles this by deliberately NOT backing
up files that are device specific and would cause problems if restored to a
different device. Usually, this means that settings and some program
registrations are gone after switching devices. If using a different tool
for backups, it can be even more painful to switch.

The *free* version of BackupBuddy I recommended will do a 'full restore' only.
Nothing else. I guess that's why it's free. But the OP wanted a backup program
that would "mirror" his Palm so this seemed to fit the bill, since that's what
it does. And yes I do do a full restore monthly when changing the batteries on
my capacitor challenged m125 and it works flawlessly. It takes less than a
minute so it's hardly worth booting my PC for the Palm Desktop routine.
>Another thing worth mentioning is how the backup programs handle device

Taking a mirror of an m125 memory and loading it into a TungE would cause major
problems, so no the free BackupBuddy probably wouldn't work for this.
BTW to the original poster: I forgot to answer your last question. You also
wanted a way to get your PDA files into you PC using a backup program. The free
version of BackupBuddy will also allow you to do this. After you make a backup,
your PDA files will be stored in Palm/Backup on your SD card. Simply use a card
reader to transfer any or all of them from there to your PC.

Since you can apparently read/write to the card from your PC, just copy
the program's .prc file to the /palm/launcher directory from your PC.
After inserting it into your Palm, copy it to the handheld.
As to your copy of BBVFS expiring, you'll have to take that up with
Blue Nomad.

The free version has now been withdrawn and is now $9.95

I don't know if the older free version is still to be found anywhere.

Why not just post the good link from the authors site?

Well since *free* BackupBuddy has apparently been withdrawn, and since it is now
being charged for, then the copy I posted might be considered *unauthorized*
freeware. Isn't that kind of warezish? I couldn't find any valid link after
being advised mine was bad, so I did the post. Hopefully those who needed it got
it.

If you know where a good link to the *free* BackupBuddy is, why not post it
yourself. It certainly would be more productive than playing netcop.

Sorry Aaron, I like many others, was not aware BBVFS was no longer free.
Far be it from me to stop you from posting what you want where you want.
Most of the people you meet online are not likely to meet you in real
life any way.

Since you don't need sophisticated features to do regular backups
automatically or save and restore sets of stuff and you just need
to do a one-time backup of everything, there is a simple solution:
1. Download FileZ. It's freeware.
2. Put it on the card in /Palm/Launcher.
3. Put the card in the Palm.
4. Launch FileZ from the card.
5. Create a directory on the SD Card.
6. Get a list of all files on the internal ("PalmCard").
7. Make sure you've got no filters, and ROM is unchecked.
8. Do Select All from the Edit menu.
9. Do Copy from the File menu.
10. Type in the pathname of the directory you created on the card.
11. Click OK, and all your files will be (slowly) copied to the card.
Since everything on the Palm is a database, copying all the databases
like this should do the trick.
Hope that helps.

My 505 won't back up using USB, due to a known problem with the 505
called SUDS. A google search will provide you with information onthis.
The solution I used was to pick up a serial cradle and it works fine.
You can find them on EBay for a real treasonable price. I checked
Amazon prior to EBay, and they can't get them in anymore.

Don't see why SUDS would stop a back-up and not a HotSync. The OP, below,
didn't mention a problem with HotSync.

You need BackupBuddyVFS. Is that what you have?

I once had this problem with a m500, and I found a program that fixed it
, as it wasn't a hardware problem (in fact it was a frozen USB comms
chip, but it wasn't permanent and could be fixed by software). I'm
pretty sure a Google search will dig this little beast out of it's hole.
